View Full Version : spin-off: what 5 container plants would you grow?
Pretend you're me and you don't know if you'll be buying a house in time to start a summer garden. What'll you put in containers you can take with when you find a house?
So far, I already have rosemary, basil, and parsley. I know I need some heirloom 'maters or I'll DIE.

um...do cukes grow in containers? (i can't imagine how but maybe?)
cukes are my must-have summer veggie. a few varieties...but at least one for sure.
oh did you mention cilantro?

umm... if I knew what would grow in containers, I probably could give you a better answer. :)
I forgot cilantro... I have seeds. Heck, I have a bottle of coriander from a spice set M gave me, and I was curious to see if it would make viable planting seeds, in addition to being a tasty spice in its own right.
So, ok, basic herbs go without saying. Pretend I still have room for a row of 5-gallon buckets (I do - there's a huge patio that actually gets sun by the looks of it).
Cukes might work. I can't imagine why not - I could make a bamboo teepee in a bucket.

definitely would have to make a teepee...those things spread and vine like mad!
zukes? squash? just one plant maybe...
what about melons? they just need root dirt...then they vine off.
oooh...peppers. jalapeno, sweet, bell (orange, red, yellow...mmmm...)

would roma tomatoes work in a container? Those are the ones I like - roasted :)
Romas would be lovely, Jodi. Peppers have the right size and are containerable. Eggplant, yes. Even a zuke if I can persuade it that it's happy in a 5 gallon bucket (heck, I'd just plant it in the ground and let the next person deal with the bounty).
But, Tracey, I'm trying to imagine even sugar babies trailed off 10 feet and me trying to move my melon container. That one, I'm nixing.

I'm thinking of planting blueberries in a container this year... I haven't done produce before and am not sure where I'd put them permanently - so this is way to try it out and move around my yard...

this site is a great home gardener resource and she has tons of stuff about container gardening. (she is a roof gardener herself) You Grow Girlâ„¢ - Gardening for the People (http://www.yougrowgirl.com/)

Tomatos, Basil, Rosemary, Chili peppers, Thyme (maybe more than one variety..I love lemon thyme). I've done strawberries in containers but man they multiply fast so they'd have to have a rather big container.

Yes, yougrowgirl is a good site. I have the book right here from the library. Also good books are "Bountiful Container" and "Incredible Vegetables from Self-Watering Containers".
I love Square Foot Gardening (which I know is harder to take with you-lol)
I'm going to try a few self-watering containers this year. I have some good websites book marked if anyone is interested in more info.
I had major garden-fever until we got 8 inches of snow last night.:sob:
Really almost anything that grows in an earth garden can grow in containers. Anyone made their own self-watering ones before? I see they are pricey.
Happy Gardening.
Lol...pretend I am you and not sure where you will be living eh? WELCOME TO MY LIFE NOW! I will be moving again in March and well, no plans for a garden at my current place.
I planted green beans in a 5 gallon bucket size pot, and used chicken wire as a trellis...would have worked GREAT, except I am a dumba$$ and bought bush beans instead of vine beans...
I have swiss chard still growing from last March in a small window box looking planter.
