And it was beautiful. I highly recommend it. Juno is the main character, 16, and she gets pregnant with her best friend. Her family is shocked but supportive, and it is just a great and realistic story. I don't want to spoil it, and I can't really even explain it. But I loved it. ;)

I guess the whole thing just seemed really sincere. Interesting quirky characters that you just find yourself really liking. I would see it again, definitely.

Guess I'm the only one here that didn't much care for it. Juno was overly quirky IMO - I'm only 25 and I couldn't understand half her slang and expressions. It just seemed like they were trying too hard to appeal to teens. The boyfriend felt much more real to me.
Warning - spoilers below!
My biggest problem with the film is a total lack of emotion from Juno altogether. There was no freakout when she found out she was pregnant - just "Oh, guess I'll go get an abortion," then "I can't abort a baby with fingernails, these people seem cool, they can have the baby." There was no trauma at all giving up her baby. Even if she felt it was the best decision, it would be hard. It made it seem like there was no emotional consequence whatsoever. Just have your baby, give it to these wonderful people, then it will be like it never happened!
The adoption process was also grossly over-simplified and glamorized. IRL, it's extremely unlikely she would have even known where the adoptive parents lived, much less been able to just stop by whenever. And when they split up, the adoption process would have been halted and possibly not resumed. Most adoption agencies would be reluctant or even refuse to allow adoption by a woman who was going through a divorce.

I haven't seen it, but have wanted to. I've heard great things, but I've also heard echos of what you said Mandy. I have a friend who gave a kid up for adoption when she was 16 & she's still dealing w/ it all the time. She was really angry about that aspect of the movie & said it was completely unrealistic. You're not alone!

I get what you guys are saying, but that was part of the charm of Juno (the character)..she is a totally unusual girl, who marches to the beat of her own drum, and singlemindedly goes ahead with her plans, whether it be deciding to seduce the boy, or how she was going to give up the baby, or that she was going to go hang out with them, whether they liked it or not((she met the parents because SHE picked the type of adoption, one where she DID meet the parents, and interview them in their home..not an anonymous one, and not through an agency, etc. ). I do think the adoption process was a bit unreal, in that yes, it would have been halted..but it's a movie...movies ARE allowed a little bit of fantasy. :p
Oh, and I am 35, and had no problems at all understanding the useage of the slang. :p

Best movie I've seen in a LONG time. I loved it. I bought it (for me) for Mother's Day. Maybe I loved it because I was adopted....I just thought the acting was brilliant.

I liked it a lot. I liked her quirkiness. Reminded me of The Gillmore Girls. As far as reality goes, they could have gone more true to that path and actual girl would take but then it would be nothing but a depressing tear jerking movie. I think it was very nicely done.
Thank you for the review. Its on my list to rent for myself this weekend - on mothers day I get a chick flick lol

We have adoptions like the one represented. It wasn't unusual in that regard to me. It seems like Juno's the kind of kid who presents her pain differently, in a flippant way. She did cry and snuggle in the hospital bed after the babe was born, which showed some "standard" emotion. Maybe it's because Ellen is Canadian and the movie was made here that made it seem real to me. That kind of humour? I don't know. Whatever, I bought it because I loved it.

Just saw this movie last night -- both DH and I liked it very much.
The only thing that bugged me just a little was that I wished there had been some mention of Juno's mother at some point. Not essential to the story, I suppose, but I found myself wondering about their history. Seems like being pregnant would bring up mother/daughter issues, if only to mourn that her mother is (apparently) no longer involved in her life.
But really... it has to be a good movie with good characters for me to even spend time thinking about stuff like that. :)

I saw it this week, the music was interesting but overall I didn't care for it,
and the fact that her and her boyfriend got back together at the end was ver disturbing to me, I don't know IMO it was not very good.

Cole's birthparents were still together when he was born, and for a year or so afterwards. For them, that wasn't the reason they placed him. There are all kinds of situations, and I like that this movie made people look at things outside the box. Cole's birthparents are both now married to other people, and still hang out frequently, usually as couples but not always. They went through a major life-changing and connecting thing together.

As an adoptive mama, it was especially tear jerking...
