Here's what is planned for today:

Right now, Kaya is building with blocks on the table so we'll get dressed and brush teeth when she is done and then we can start.

~We'll start with yoga and stretching. We've gotten out of the habit if starting the day with this and I want to get back to it.

~Kaya will fill in the temp and weather on her calendar page. We will note the big difference in temps from last week and today. I'll show her about tally marks and will make a table where she can tally how many days so far have been sunny, cloudy, snowy, rainy etc. (At the end of the month we will do a bar graph to show the data.)

~We will talk about 32* being the freezing point and why all of the snow has melted. How the water wants to travel down because of gravity and how the water has created the gullies on the property.

~Using the Dolch words we've been playing Memory with, I will ask Kaya to use as many of them as she can in either a journal entry, letter or story.

~Because she has been having a little trouble counting by 5's, getting mixed up with some of the numbers after 50, I will use chalk to write the numbers on the floor of the basement and have her leap from number to number while saying the one she is landing on. Hoping this will help her reinforce the order and pattern.

~We got a book of fables and one of Chinese Legends at the library, so reading today will be from those and we'll discuss what the stories are aiming to teach. I'll see if she can verbally come up with a fable or legend to teach a lesson.

~I'm hoping we will take a walk in town which is always a great time to spark observations and discussions.

Sarah has therapy again this morning, so the girls have a list of assignments on the chalkboard, including practicing cursive, language arts/spelling/reading comprehension worksheets, reading time, and a journal entry. After lunch we have homeschool group at a friend's house where they will get to play outside(probably in the mud...lol). When we get back we have a reading assignment about William Penn. For Science, dh brought home some bluestone from a jobsite that has little shells imprints in it. We are going to look at it with a magnifying glass. He also found some huge boulders with little three toed prints in the stone. If we have time before it gets dark, we are going to run over there to check it out. He has some professors from New Paltz coming to look at it too.

worksheets about long/short vowels and ABC order

new spelling list to read/write

new Bible verse to memorize

practice cursive w/ her whole name (Katherine)

read one chapter from either Little House or Junie B.

This afternoon we will go on a hike up on the north end of the island...there's a great nature trail up there

I'm hoping to fit in a "home ec"-type lesson about measuring when I cook dinner tonight

Meeshi...can you tell me more about your weather calendar? Did you find it somewhere or create it?

Basically, I printed off one of those wonderful calendar pages from Author Jan Brett's Home Page - A Great Place for Ideas (http://www.janbrett.com) Every morning, we work on finding todays day and date. We check our thermometer and add the days temperature and weather (at the moment, of course it changes throughout the day so we just stick with our mornings observations) After she fills in the info, I ask questions like: What was the date of the day that was the warmest so far? Which Monday was cooler? Have we had more sunny or cloudy days? and so on...

We keep the page on the fridge when not filling it in. :)

We have 3 days left before we leave on a major trip so I need to be doing laundry and dishes all day, prepping for a housecleaner that is coming this afternoon (I know no one is feeling sorry for me about that), house sitter needs to come over and get a walk through about all the animals, gather what we plan to work on while away (not our normal curriculum), and get our library books in order. I'm trying not to think about it all, just what is set before me in the moment.

Today we will:

Bible- intro to book of Song of Songs and sing song for memorizing Old Testament books of Bible, Handwriting page using our new verse Proverbs 11:25

Reading- workbook page with review vocabulary and new phonics rule (/oy/ sound spelled with oy and oi, the kids get to make a little book of fold out paper boys (fold and cut) and then choose oy/oi words to write in their 'boy' book

Math- calender page, # of the day activities, math worksheets on telling time

Art- another lesson from their Draw Squad (Commander Mark) art program

The kids will each spend time reading aloud to me. Ds is on his last Bob book and when he passes this book we will go to the library as he gets to apply for his own library card!

We also have a pile of new library books that are on our new math (telling time) and science (snow and ice) topics so we'll spend time with those.

Sarah

Attached is the calender page that we use. In the box the kids draw what it looks like outside (weather, leaves on trees, any birds at our window feeder). Some days they have drawn the fun thing they did the day before or something like that as well. We also often chart the amount of eggs we get from the chickens and things like that. We don't have an outside thermometer but I love that idea as well, we may add that next year. The attachment should show as one page- you may need to change the margins to .5" at all sides for it to show properly

Still doing Time4Learning. We're very happy with it. The kids are learning SO much more than I would have thought to cover. :)

(For example, DD did ordinal numbers this week)

Way to go Elias!
We are finishing up our last week studying the "Sea" and will move on to the "Sky" next week.
Everyone did 2 pages in MUS, the bigs completed their Prima Latina lesson and Gabby worked on long vowel sounds.

Here is what we did today:
Joseph worked on prefixes/suffixes and roots in his reading book
Caroline worked on words with long o sounds in them in her reading book.
Libby worked on her reading book with three letter words.
We read a story about Ancient Egypt (we are talking about communities/culture and how/why they change) and discussed it (all of us).
The girls are working on the five senses and they did a report on popcorn. ;) We popped popcorn and they filled in how it felt, smelled, sounded, tasted and looked.
We made 15 bean soup for dinner. The girls found one of each of the 15 beans and then Libby wanted to go to bean.com to find out what each one was. We did find a website that had pictures of beans and we labelled them.
The girls had tap/ballet tonight.

Oh, we also played a money boardgame today.
