View Full Version : How muchdoes {this} cost where you live
I thought it would be an interesting comparison on grocery prices across the US. I am pulling from the ads that are online as far as prices go, so it limits what I am including:
a berry
a melon
citrus fruit
apples
grapes
bananas
other fruit
vegetables-- wide range, include what you buy
chicken-- whole
chicken, boneless skinless
other meat-- pork or beef, include the cuts
juice
milk
eggs
yogurt
cheese
i think the stuff that is more fresh is what will vary more. We only have organic options on some of these things, so if you buy organic, include that in your description. Also feel free to add any other prices that you can. I am going grocery shopping today so I ought to be able to add the prices

I really don't know here! I'm not used to Virginia prices yet. It's definitely a tad higher than GA for most things. I don't buy much fruit or veggies out of season (cuz I'm cheap and I like fresh stuff when possible), so I really couldn't say on berries, melons, cukes, etc right now. What I could tell you is how much a bunch of beets costs or a lb of sweet potatoes costs. :p

None of mine are usually organic:
a berry - strawberries from California, $3 per pound
a melon - cantaloupe, $2.50 on average
citrus fruit - in the fall, 5 pounds of mandarins for about $4. Winter, 4 pounds of navels for $6
apples - $4 for a 5 pound bag of small McIntosh apples
grapes - $2 a pound
bananas - $.50 a pound
other fruit - $3 for a 1.5 pound bag of kiwifruit
vegetables-- wide range, include what you buy
We buy onions, potatoes, squash, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, brocolli, celery, lettuce, and frozen green beans. They're all pretty good buys for the amount of nutrition they pack.
chicken-- whole - Grocery store, $2 per pound
chicken, boneless skinless - don't buy. But they're about $26 for an 8 pound box of frozen breasts.
other meat-- pork or beef, include the cuts - I buy hamburger (1.39 pound), chicken legs (1.69 pound), pork chops (1.99 pound), whole frozen wild salmon (1.50 pound).
juice - don't really buy. Sometimes frozen concentrate for $1 on sale.
milk - $3.59 for 2%
eggs - $5 for a flat (30 eggs) of medium
yogurt - don't buy except on clearance on sell-by date for .99 for a quart.
cheese - $9 for 2 pounds. Cheese is really expensive in Canada, I don't know why. If I cross the border I can get the same size for $5 in the US.

some of this drawn from the sale flyer otherwise i'd have no clue ;)
a berry- imported blackberries (ugh) 2.99/pt (we don't buy out of season)
a melon - no clue, i don't buy melons except for the one week a year they're cheap
citrus fruit: California!! navels 8lb for $3.94. lemons 3/$2.
apples 89c local/Integrated Pest Management, meaning they use ladybugs etc and only spray when they must, in season (co-op)
grapes - really varies. right now 2.99/lb nonorganic, 4.99/lb organic. in season, 99c/lb nonorganic 1.29/lb organic
bananas 49c nonorganic 89c organic
other fruit - tons of out of season fruit & veg that we don't buy at price chopper in the sale flyer. European cukes 2 for $3, cherries $3.99/lb, hothouse tomatoes 2.49/lb, california broccoli 1.69/bch
vegetables-- wide range, include what you buy
5 lb potatoes 2.89 pc, 5.60 local and organic at co-op, we do either depending on budget and where we are to shop
romaine - 2.49/large head or hearts 2 for $5, right now at local grocery, prob from CA
butternut squash - not sure, I think 1.xx/lb usually at co-op
I usually buy whatever they have at the co-op through the winter, they are pretty good about keeping things as local as possible although they have some out of season things sometimes like tomatoes (which go up to 3.99/lb in winter) and grapes. Usually this means big bags of local organic root veg kept in cold storage - beets, turnips, parsnips, carrots, potatoes - and roasting them in the oven (mmm and then mashing w/Amish butter and raw jersey cream). A big ol' bag costs around $7-9 depending on the season.
chicken-- whole 99c/lb-1.39/lb - if we buy local organic it is 3.50
chicken, boneless skinless - on sale 1.88/lb, we usually buy this price, but reg price is 1.99-2.99 depending on where
other meat-- pork or beef, include the cuts - boneless chuck 1.99/lb
the local grassfed organic beef we bought at 1/4 beef at a time, mostly ground: 2.65/lb includes vacuum seal
whole pig local organic smoked, cut vac packed $2.50/lb nitrite free too or 5.25/lb pork chops, 4.50/lb grd pork, 5.95/lb hams w/bone, 5.25/lb bacon
juice - 1.89 a half gal for nonorganic apple that's from canada and not from concentrate, at price chopper
milk - we don't buy and i have no idea but half n half (pc, one of the worst things in our shopping cart) $2.99/half gal
eggs - we grow our own ;) but 3.50 free-range local, 4.19 free-range organic local at the food co-op, no idea at the grocery store! lol
yogurt - no idea, i haven't bought it in a long time
cheese - big block of cabot, $8. ugh how much is it. lol - 8 oz pkg on sale for 2.89 i think? so 2 lb for $8 at pc. local cheeses vary so much - we trade eggs for some that is very $$ and then we often buy grafton trim, which is lumpy cut off pieces of Grafton cheddar (local). We don't care, we grate it or eat it as lumps ;). That is about as cheap as Cabot cheddar, which is local but decidedly not organic.
Whew...I was meal planning and grocery list making for the month while working on this, and this was actually helpful to look at. :)
going to add tomorrow-- I only made it to costco tonight.

That's funny... I bought one of a few citrus friuts today at Fred Meyers because I am making quick breads this weekend with the kids and wanted to make a lemon and an orange one. lol... so this is perfect.
I don't buy much produce this time of year becuase all berries, melons, etc are out of season. I did get a bunch this summer and froze them, so we eat them, we just dont buy them out of season. All the stuff I bought here was on sale as well....
organic orange cost me $1.28lb
organic apples - $1.99 lb
grapes - $3.99 lb (don't buy them, but they were claimed "on sale" at $3.99 and so I took notice enough to remember how much they were at least)
organic bananas - $.99 lb
ground beef was $2.79 lb on sale today.
Walla Walla onions were on sale for $.98 lb
Garlic was 3/$1
milk - organic "local" milk from costco for $8 for 1 1/2 gal
eggs - free... lol... I have chickens
cheese - $7.99 for a 2 lb baby loaf of cheddar (sometimes you can get it for $6.99 at Costco)

Estimates, since I don't buy all of these things. I won't buy imported fruit.
a berry--all out of season (though we should get strawberries soon!) 2.99/pint of strawberries. Everything else is imported.
a melon--imported small watermelon for $4
citrus fruit--cheap! Box of cuties for $5. Even cheaper! Oranges off of our tree--free!
apples--about 1.99/lb right now for most kinds. Not organic, though--those are 2.99/lb
grapes--way too expensive because they are imported. Organic $5-6/lb, conventional $3-4/lb
bananas--79cents/lb, organic 89cents/lb
other fruit
vegetables-- wide range, include what you buy (what we're buying right now, in the winter)
baby bok choy 89 cents/lb
bag organic baby carrots 1.99
bag organic carrots (1 lb) 1.99
3 pack organic romaine lettuce 2.99
organic sweet potatoes 1.99/lb
organic winter squash 1.99-3.99/lb
organic broccoli 2.99/lb (I think)
organic baby spinach 4.99/lb
organic onions 3.99/3lb bag
chicken-- whole: Organic is 4.99/lb not organic is 1.99/lb unless on sale.
chicken, boneless skinless--8.99/lb for organic (I think I can get it at 7.99 at TJ's) For non-organic, it goes on sale sometimes for 1.99/lb, or I can get it frozen at TJ's for 2.99/lb.
other meat-- pork or beef, include the cuts
I just bought grassfed beef stew meat for 8.99/lb. There were a few other cuts at 8.99/lb, most were more. Ground beef was 5.99/lb. I don't buy much beef. I haven't purchased pork in forever, so I don't know. Last year I got a whole bunch of pork ribs for DH's birthday dinner (organic, humanely raised, all that), I think they were $10/lb.
juice--$2.50 for the regular containers at TJs for apple juice, right? We don't buy juice much. Oh, I get the calcium fortified OJ at Whole Foods for $4 for the big jug.
milk--$3.79 for a gallon. I don't know about organic because I don't buy milk (just see conventional advertised sometimes).
eggs--I pay $3.89 a dozen for the locally raised from chickens treated nicely. That's in the grocery store. The eggs from my CSA are REALLY expensive.
yogurt--Soy yogurt from whole foods for .89/8 oz container. Same price as conventional yogurt at the grocery store, unless they are on sale. Organic yogurt containers are $1.19 and up. TJ's is the definite deal for plain, nonfat organic yogurt--the big containers (32 oz) for $2.79.
cheese--$7 for 32 oz of mozzarella, $12 for 32 oz of the extra sharp cheddar we get. That's not organic cheese, I'm working on that still.
