Yes, lids.

I have saved all the lids from jars for a LONG time. Anyhow, yesterday I emptied out my supplies (home improvement stuff) and dumped everything on my curb, and posted it on Craigslist.

Nice - everything was mostly gone in 1 hour. :D

So, now I am cleaning the lingering mess in the closet - a lot of which is the aforementioned lids.

They are NOT recyclable? Correct?

Any suggestions - I really don't like to dump stuff like that.....

They are not recyclable. We went to see the Million Dollar Recycling Machine in Vermont (that is really what they call it) and I was shocked to see the HUGE mountain of nonrecyclable lids that the poor workers have to sort from the jars. The impact of that image - let's just say I have started putting all our lids in the garbage! Ugh!

Are the metal lids that come with glass jars recyclable? I always toss both into the bin, same with the lids for plastic bottles. What a waste if we can't recycle them, too.

I am not 100% sure. I agree but man, what a waste of resources to send the lids to recycling and have them use person-power to sort them. Ugh. I tell ya, I have always put my lids in the recycle bin...often because we sometimes rescue a container and reuse it instead.

Also, things could vary from recycling program to recycling program...

Not if they have the little plastic sealing ring around them. Sad, isn't it?

I just want to know when it is going to stop and we are going to have to buy everything in bulk so we don't waste so much stupid packaging... ???

our city doesn't pick up glass for recycling. How strange is that? *sigh*

someone on freecycle might want them for a project! at the folk festival we went to this year, there was a kids' craft place set up with awesome musical instrument making, and the tambourine was filled with metal lids of all sorts. i am always completely amazed at what freecyclers take. lol.

oh, val...i'm SO with you...sometimes. when i am sweating leaving the ped's office or doing hours and hours of research to come to some sort of decision or spending so much time making from scratch...every once in a while, i think...why why why am i someone who has to care about these things...lol.

anytime I have non recyclable stuff like that, when I do save it up, I run it through the diswasher and donate to the local preschool.


So, if I am hearing this correctly, the metal lids on, say, Adam's peanut butter jars, are NOT recycleable either??

At Bonnaroo, they wanted us to save all our bottle tops (they gave us bags for recycling), and turn them in. They were hoping to use the resulting mountain of bottle tops from *one event* to help push for recyclable lids.

Maybe we should start a thread with good ways to repurpose lids? I seem to remember a craft using the metal tops of frozen juice containers to make pierced tin mobiles. And of course that milk bottle lid game (like tiddly winks).
