I am looking into purchasing the Shurley English kit. I have a 2nd grader and 3rd grader (both boys) neither of who have strong grammer skills. This is our 1st year homeschooling and I am curious to know if any other moms are using the same grade level for different children that are in different grades? I was using Bob Jones but I am not pleased with that right now. I don't feel like there is enough repetition in it for my boys. It's like we do one short daily lesson and then the next day it is moving to something else before they can actually get ahold of the 1st lesson.

I would really love some feedback on combining grades for just English.
Also if you use Shurley English..what's your thought on it?

TIA!

We used it for a couple of years and combined 3 close grades.

We didn't use it as a stand-alone English program, though. We skipped the writing portion because I have other curriculum I prefer for that - we only used the grammar portion of it.

I have a love/hate relationship with it. It is very effective. Very. It's also complicated to use and can be boring for some children. Frankly, I and an older son who sometimes taught this for me used "characters", ie, we made a game of being weird teachers, to keep the children's interest, but it was worth it I guess because they did learn alot.

I haven't used it last year and this because we have a baby at home and it's just too much work for a baby year.
