typical recommedation and we have discussed this herb from time to time here at amitys.
I jsut found out that
Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) is of use if the hypothyroidism is due to iodine deficiency, because it (and other seaweeds) contain lots of iodine (and of course, a host of other minerals).
If low iodine intake is not the problem, bladderwrack is a nice mineral herb which can be a problem if the low thyroid function is due to too much iodine.
This seaweed is recommeded in herbal texts of old which is why many herbies still refer to it. HOWEVER western diets do not lack iodine typically due to it being added to our foods.
So bladder wrack is not neccessarily the herb of choice for hypothyroid in our modern world unless the client does not use sea salt, iodized salt or seafood.
Research is currently pointing toward excess insulin in hypothyroid. I will certainly share this as I understand this. Of course open for debate, this is why we bring this to our littel forum. So we can figure things out.:D

Hypothyroid help-
ditch the carbs, exercise, and get enough minerals into your diet.
Autoimmune hypothyroid (Hashimoto's) didn't respond to this regimen though according to Paul Bergner, herbalist.

KR, Mark has a whole shpeal about organic versus inorganic iodine. His firm belief is that we need organic iodine to make a positive difference in our health. I'm not sure what happens with too much inorganic iodine, but I would think that it would be better to not have it.

What is organic iodine? From the sea vegetables and salt?

Mark has a good way of explaining organic versus inorganic, but I will try my hand at it in his absence. If I'm remembering correctly, inorganic iodine is process, maybe heated, which keeps our bodies from being able to use it effectively. The organic iodine is what would be found in sea vegetables and natural sea salt.

i ran across some info on the thyroid while looking into candida problems.
"Get some liquid iodine from the store or pharmacy. Lugo's brand is best but whatever they have will do. Now paint a spot about the size of a half dollar on your stomach somewhere. Now if it disappears in less than 24 hours your thyroid is starving for iodine and is not working like it was designed. Its that simple! "
here's the website i found this on....
Problem Thyroid (http://www.yeastinfectionadvisor.com/problemthyroid.html)
so i tried it & my spot disappeared in about 10-12 hours. i started liquid iodine daily about two months ago & have dropped the progesterone cream i was using in my luteal phase because i feel so good. i also did an herbal detox & i think the problem candida is either gone or greatly reduced:cuc:
i know this has nothing to do with your discussion on bladderwrack but it may be useful info about hypothyroid & iodine. & i learn so much from you kr:hbeat: thanks:)

Tonya that is awesome! I am alsways so happy when people can actually work through their health problems because some are simple modifications.
And I also advocate choice of health even if that means drugs and doctors every day of ones life (although you all know I strive to be on the other side of the line. I AM the doctor of myself at least for now in most things) lol
So wonderful you are doing better mama.

When I was doing a bit of digging around about content of salt, I did find that the REAL Salt had iodine, which I am going to assume is organic, due to it not being processed. I do eat fish once in awhile, but am taking it in moderation, due to the toxicity levels. I do like Chlorella though, which has been an awesome supplement for me to take. Do iodine and chlorophyll typically go hand in hand?
I need to find some liquid iodine and do that test on myself. I know that dh has a regular low body temp reading of 97.3, so he will benefit from this suggestion as well. THANKS!

well chlorophyl is the plant energy, right which I think effects the entire body.
I know it is said if you get enough chlorophyll you dotn need deodorant. hmmm...
Iodine I think is specific to thyroid hormone adn I am not certian it has any other physical purpose for humans.
Anyone else know? Great question Sue.
I know we need both....lol
