We were reading a book on matter and saw this experiment so we decided to try it. It called for whole milk, but we didn't have any and used 2% instead. It didn't work:( We kept trying it, using more ice, longer time etc. I looked it up online and found people saying they used other milk, it worked in like 5 minutes, etc. I'm wondering what we did wrong (LOL) Any thoughts
You had enough rock salt? That really makes a difference in the freezing.
We made it with cream in co-op last year. It was pretty tasty, but poor Patrick was doubled over in pain from the stomachache it gave him.

We didn't have rock salt. All the recipes I ran across and the one in the book just called for regular salt. I think it called for 12 ice cubes and like 1 tbl salt. The ice melted before the 10 minutes were up so we just put a bunch of ice in and poured salt over it (LOL)

We've done this with new paint cans. We put the recipe contents in a quart paint can and then put that inside a gallon one with the ice and rock salt. I hammered the lids closed and then let all the homeschool co-op kids play 'kick the can' and various other relays (on a tarp outside) for 10mins. It was yummy and a fun surprise since I didn't get the kids what was in the cans.

hmm. I remember we used rock salt and LOTS of ice.
You know what's more fun? this cool thing my mom got us for xmas last year:
Ice Cream Ball, Pint: Campsite Fun at L.L.Bean (http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1&categoryId=41066&sc1=Search&feat=sr)
:p But we haven't used it enough. I should get some rock salt and yogurt. The kids are easily impressed by frozen yogurt, and it's much lower in sugar.

The kids at the school where I work tried making it last year, but theirs didn't freeze very well, either. They ended up drinking it, but said it tasted good.
