I went to the HSLDA to check it out and possibly join. on the front page it had a link to bills and how they feel parents should vote. On Assembly Bill 755: Anti-corporal Punishment Bill the HSLDA's Position:
Strongly Oppose
I am not trying to start a debate but why would they have a stance on a bill that has nothing to do with HSing? Am I missing something??

HSLDA | California Legislation 2007—Assembly Bill 755: Anti-corporal Punishment Bill (http://www.hslda.org/Legislation/State/ca/2007/CAAB755/default.asp)

see here:
http://www.hslda.org/Legislation/State/ca/2007/CAAB755/AB_755_Action_Alert_070424.pdf

No matter how you stand on the subject (to me) they have no business posting a stance on this issue as it doesn't seem to have anything to do with HSing. They can do anything they would like (lol) but it doesn't fit IMO.
Am I wrong?

I guess they want homeschooling parents to have the right to beat their children in the name of education? :p

I would guess that it has more to do with parents rights, which I think would be important to most homeschoolers. (Not the right for bad parents to beat their children--that's already illegal!)
Should parents--let's say good parents with lots of tools, resources and ways of disciplining their children who occaisionally find that swatting a bottom is an effective punishment for their child in certain situations in an overall loving environment-- have to go to JAIL for this choice? Is that really what is best for the child?
I would think that one can oppose spanking and still think that an anti-corporal punishment law could be harmful and unreasonable. We all want to make the best decisions that we can for our children, and So merely speculating, but I assume that is why HSLDA is strongly opposed to this bill.

Ok, but then I read the text of the bill and it isn't about corporal punishment at all. It's about child abuse and the bill outlines more clearly what is child abuse and consequences for it. So now I'm as confused as the op.

Because many homeschoolers are Christians and there are those who do spank and feel that it's a Biblically allowed discipline tool for their children.

I don't see the actual logical connection to a HOMESCHOOLING association and this (or any other form of discipline for that matter).
If there is where is the line drawn? Should they take stances on every child issue? From breastfeeding to vaccinations? (sheesh, perhaps they do for all I know! LOL!)
I think if it has nothing to do with education they should not be pushing their stance and I think it's disappointing (to put it mildly).

I don't want to start a debate so i am not going to answer that question :)

Ok so I guess we are thinking it has to do with parent's rights so that's how it ties in to the HSLDA? :eyes:

edited to add:
this really isn't about whether I think that bill should or should not pass. I just want to understand why a HSing group would make such stance for OR against it.

I wouldn't join the HSLDA.

If I were you, I'd join the California Homeschool Network instead.
California Homeschool Network - Welcome (http://californiahomeschool.net/default.htm)

I used to belong to both but think the the HSLDA is a bit right wing for me.

I won't join the HSLDA for that and other reasons. I'm glad they're around, and I think they've done a lot of great work.

I also think they overstep their bounds as an organization. When they oppose gay marriage as an organization, they're lumping the rest of homeschoolers with them, and I don't much appreciate that. Same with this corporal punishment crap. It's not what homeschoolers are ALL about, and I'm not happy to be associated with it.

Their position on gay marriage (why on earth do they care?):

ah ok. So they do tend to take stances on non-schooling issues. I guess i live in a bubble as this shocked me.
thank you for posting that. I don't think it's the right place for us.

IMHO they are fundamental Christian organization first, and a homeschooling organization second. Their "alerts" often have nothing to do with homeschooling, but with the far right fundamental agenda.

No, you're not wrong KD.

I agree with Mamaxt and earthrain.

They overstep their bounds. I filled in the whole on-line form years ago and did not hit submit once I read the last page. They had some write-up about how they do not support same sex families (don't quote me, I'm not going back to look.)

I'm not tolerant of that type of discrimination and I'll never give money to any organization practicing in that manner.

The anti-corporal punishment opposition takes the cake.

They recently issued an alert wanting everyone to urge their representitive to not support a bill that would extend workplace protection against discrimination to homosexuals and those who are trans-gender.

Sheesh. And that bill SO much to do with homeschooling, doesn't it?

If they'd just stick to what they appear to do, I wouldn't care in the least that the founders are politically active Christians. Its when they associate their values with my cause that it pisses me off.

 They also oppose the Matthew Shepard hate crime law. They are stating that hate crimes are declining.

Oh and in that alert they said something like ...no need to identify yourself as a homeschooler just say "------" And they gave a script about calling as a concerned citizen

I honestly had NO idea.

Even though corporal punishment in the schools doesn't really have anything to do with homeschooling, I feel it's a barbaric practice and therefore I'm interested in seeing that it's stopped. So ... I guess my concern would be as a citizen. Violence breeds violence. In the schools. Where the majority of our young citizens are trapped all day every day.

nm. I don't really see the connection there.
