In honor of Halloween, we have been learning about nocturnal animals. So yesterday, just as the sun was going down, we went to the U.F. bat house. If anyone lives in the North Central Florida area I highly recommend this! It was so cool. The bat house, which is right across the road from Lake Alice, is home to about 60,000 bats ( Brazilian Free-Tail and Southeastern bats ). There are park benches along the side walk where people can sit while waiting for the bats to come out, but once they do come out very few people remain in their seats. A few early risers flutter past and they all come out. Aidan said they were swarming like bees. They all follow the same path to the lake to drink, before splitting up to eat. We followed them across the road to watch them at the lake, as did several other people.
On the way home, Aidan decided I needed to sew a bat suit for him, so he could fly too.
