Does anyone freeze their apple pies? I have a large amount of apples that I need to do something with and was wondering if I could freeze the whole pies or if I need to just freeze the apples in a ready to go fashion.

My mom used to freeze whole pies, of all sorts. She'd put them in the freezer, in the pie plate, until frozen solid and then pop it out of the pie plate, rewrap and put back in freezer. I'm not sure what she did for thawing, etc...
