I have a question for those who do professional photography.

Ds is having a BM in November and we are NOT hiring a photographer for the party. We are just not big picture people. BUT we do want to have some family portraits made a few days prior. I have called a few photographers, but they don't do portraits(just the full party which would include the Thursday picture taking in the package), but we need someone to come to our site and take photos(Pictures of ds and our family on the bima in the synagogue). Should I stay away from the wedding/bar mitzvah types and go with someother type? Am I calling what I want the wrong thing? It seems like it should be much easier than it is turning out to be to find someone.

Thanks!

I'm not a professional photographer, BUT I've hired a lot of professional photographers over the years

I'd just look for a photographer that will come to your house. Half of the portrait photographers I've used over the years will travel to the location of your choosing - including your home. I don't think it should be hard. Just call around and ask if they would be willing to do the sitting in your home.

sounds like you are calling event photographers, not family portrait photographers.

a family/portrait photographer will do just that...take a portrait of your family. you aren't hiring them to do the event photography, just a one time photo session of your family at the location of your choice...

hth!

okay...thank you!!

You are right, the list I am working from is from event planning lists, so that explains that. Well...then I will work on other photographers this week!! Thanks for that. I thought I was doing something wrong... I knew it had to be easier to find a photographer to do a portrait. User error!!

Thanks so much!!!

jodi, you're so sweet  i see that she wants photos *in* her synogogue though...i'm not sure i have the lighting to do that justice.

while i do have a great flash, photos in a church or syn often require more powerful flash, or multiple flashes, than i have...that's why i didn't offer. the one i have is great for portrait work but not really for lighting up a big space.

i do mainly natural light work and some minor flash work (mine is a powerful flash but it's not the caliber i'd choose to use in that kind of setting...)

sarah, i'd be happy to talk with you though, if you'd like. no pressure (i am never about pressure.)

I didn't ask because I didn't think you did portraits. I would like to talk to you. Let me know your contact info!

hey, I'm bummed out I never got around to getting my kids pictures done while in the middle of moving hell. If you can't do mine, I can drool over the ones you do for others, right? :)

Just thought but if you are calling photographers who do alot of BM they might be just quoting you their standard BM package?
