This thread is for those wanting to get started on holiday prep. You can write your plans out and edit into it your progress. If interested, put up a list of what you are looking for (gifts, decorations, craft supplies) or what you have to offer, maybe get a trade & barter system worked out to meet thrifty/compactin/not buying it goals.

Those crafty and gifted ladies here can give how-to tutorials and organization tips, pics, etc. if they feel inclined.

Let the holiday celebrations begin!

I don't know how thrifty this is but we decided all the adults in our family are getting hallmark ornaments this year. It will probably save us money because we end up spending more on people than we budget. Also this way I am planning on buying one ornament a week until we are done with Christmas shopping.

We will probably make some smaller gifts for some people in our church but I am going to do that out of craft supplies that I already have around.

I am interested to see what everyone else is doing.

We plan on doing webkinz for the younger cousins (4 girls/1boy) and maybe itunes gift cards for the older cousins (2).

I am making blankets for the kids, along with new pillowcases.
Other than that I am not sure what we are going to do.

I actually started working on a few things for my kids today.

I'm interested in any of the following things if anyone wants to trade with me...

stationary or notecards or journals
custom knitting for doll sweaters etc...
craft kits w/ natural supplies
candles, soaps, natural body care items
waldorf toys
playstands w/ awning
someone to roll hem my silk into play silks. I'd even share the silk as payment..
great books for kids
a shaving mug and soap for my ds who is just growing a mustache :drop:
open to other ideas for my dad/mom and IL's

I'll be back to do lots of editing.

We're not getting a tree this year for various reasons so we're trying to come up with an alternative. We'll be decorating a tree outside with popcorn and cranberries as well as pine cones with pb & seed. We're making candles on the autumnal equinox/mabon and we'll probably use candles in place of electric lights this year, make more if we burn all of the equinox candles.

Hmmm. I need to work on this. This is just as good a place as any to get started thinking...

I want to get a sewing machine. I've been promised one for both Mother's day and my birthday, but apparently, I have to go and get it myself, so I need to do that.

Then...I want to make matching PJ's for nieces and nephews and my kiddos. Some are similar sizes, so that helps.

I am guessing we will be celebrating Christmas with DH's family on Thanksgiving, so things will need to be done by then. I would like to have them done by then anyway, actually November 18, DD's birthday, so that we can spend the holiday weekends baking, decorating, or playing, etc.

DH--electronic weatherstation
DH birthday (Dec. 29)--

DDs--either for Christmas or birthdays (Nov. 18 and Jan. 11)--pettiskirts
DD (11 mos. at Christmas)--pettiskirt, book, wooden pull toy?
DD (4 at Christmas)--pettiskirt, book

DSs--
DS(9)--book
DS(6)--book

MIL
FIL

Drawing for other gifts (4 kids/2 adults)
4 nephews
1 niece

DH's Grandma

Mom
Dad
3 nieces
2 nephews
something for niece/nephew due Jan 3?

Shoot, and a whole scad of birthdays:
SIL(Nov. 4)DH's homemade pickles and a card?!
SIL (Dec 2)DH's homemade pickles and a card
DD#1(Nov. 18) pettiskirt?--Hey! I forgot I bought a like-new bike for DD at my neighbor's sister's garage sale--it's in her garage!
Nephew, 3 (Nov 26)
MIL (Nov 28)
BIL (Nov 24)DH's homemade pickles and a card
Mom (Dec 4)
Niece, 6 (Dec 20) $6 and small gift
Nephew (Dec 23)???He's 17 and has everything....
Nephew, 4 (Dec. 24) $4 and small gift
DH (Dec. 29)
Brother (Jan 10)DH's homemade pickles and a card
DD#2 (Jan 11)pettiskirt? playsilk? We usually don't buy anything on birthday #1
SIL-to-be (Jan 13)DH's homemade pickles and a card

I think we should work up a really awesome label for the pickle jars, LOL.

Back to Christmas:
We bought the Wii. It was good timing, as the guy at Best Buy said this would be the last shipment before Christmas, and it was on sale for $250. Not exactly thrifty. So, maybe games for each person? Or we might ask for those from grandparents.

Movies: Santa Clause 3 and The Muppets Season 2 releases Aug. 7!

I'm having trouble imagining what else they can possibly use, so I need to do some thinking. I'd like to come up with a special outing or something as part of their gift. Perhaps a trip to the Shed Aquarium Shedd Aquarium | Home (http://www.sheddaquarium.org/index.html)
Looking at this, we could pay for a membership with one visit. However, it is 3 hours away, so I don't know if we will really use it. Plus, because it would always be a planned trip, we could just plan on going on free days. Considering CityPass or GoChicago Card to use on visits (my brother and his fiancee live nearby, so we have an excuse to go explore the city AND a place to stay ;) ).Might ask for these from grandparents.

additional expenses:
Christmas tree and decorating "party food"

Stockings:
oranges
underwear
toothbrushes

Need to find a stocking for DD#2

I have been setting money aside in my ING account for Christmas, and want to budget to include EVERTHING for Christmas (extra food, gifts, decorations, clothes, travel).

Clothing: (to remind me to see what we have):
DS#1-- dress pants, shirt, and shoes done
DS#2--set with dress pants and shirt, dress shoes
DD#1--dress and shoes, might need tights
DD#2--have some 12 mos. Christmas outfits. Have tights. Might need shoes.
Me--Ugh. I think I'm good.

Travel plans?
Check w/ family after Labor Day
My guess is: Thanksgiving (most of the week) at IL's
We'll need extra $$ for eating out and plan/bring food. Likely responsible for one or two meals for everyone.

Some time around Christmas or actual Christmas will be spent with my family. I am guessing at my sister's because she is pregnant and is due Jan. 3. If we celebrate before Christmas, I don't know if we will also travel on Christmas day to either my parents or IL's.

Three birthday gifts and Christmas gifts for my sisters' family (3 nieces, 2 nephews) will need to be shipped. I'm hoping to do pj's for the younger 3 and pj pants for the older two. So--boxed and shipped by, say Dec. 1.

I really have no ideas so far of what we want to give, so I am just going to add names, and then edit as I go along, as ideas come in. The kids are getting harder and harder to buy for now, with Suki developing teenage tastes, but still too immature for the actual stuff, and Kalki owning every game system out there, and the games he wants, and having not much interest in anything else beyond them . And then my ILs are just all around tough, so lots of thinking required there. I just really want to get a start on everything, though, cause the amount of spending we do to live up to dh's standards is huge (for us...like in the few thousand range..for 5 people), and it would work soooo much better if I could whittle the buying down over time, rather then all in December.

So, the list:

Suki: Digicam. Skate helmet to replace the bike helmet she currently hates and barely fits. Sewing kit.

Kalki: Electric drum kit...hoping IL's will chip in with lessons. Skate helmet to replace the bike helmet he currently hates and barely fits. Warhammer miniatures.

Dh: Who knows. The guy is SO hard to shop for! Maybe mp3 player

I always have a hard time with Christmas, since all our our (immediate) family's birthdays are right before it. Ian's is Aug 5, Mine and Clint's (dh) are in Sept, Jake's October 11, and Shelby on Nov13...By the time I get all the birthdays out of the way, I'm out of ideas for Christmas.

I do know that we've scaled way back on birthday gifts this year and plan to for christmas as well.

So far, I have the following things planned and will update as needed:
MIL - possibly a quilt, but probably embroidered/monogrammed linens and things for her new house

SIL - an embroidered madebyme messenger back for college - she's gone bts after her 2nd baby and could use a really nice bag :)

Kids - We'd discussed the Wii, but honestly, I don't let the kids play video games now...they pretty much never have and I don't want to start now lol...Also, I don't know that we can afford it...

Anyone else, I don't know...I think I'll probably make most of the adult women embroidered kitchen towels or nice purses

I'm fresh out of ideas right now tho...

We have really shortened our Christmas buying list as far as family and friends are concerned but we do buy token gifts for dh's 45 staff members so the actual number of gifts is still pretty big.

Not sure what everyone is getting yet but I will write down who we are giving to.

Dh- handmade long sleeved raglans and pj pants

Gabe- skate board, spiderman t, homemade jammies, sherpa hoodie, legos, and stocking

Gavin-skate board, spiderman t, homemade jammies, sherpa hoodie, legos, and stocking

Gwen- homemade jammies, quilt, sherpa hoodie

My Parents- 2 handmade nighties and a sherpa hoodie for my mom.

IL's- Shotgun Shell looking homemade birdfeeder for FIL and a handmade robe for MIL

Neice- 2 sets of pj's and an outfit. Need to come up with a b-day gift as well

Nephew- wooden chunky puzzle set and a quilt that I already made

Maryalene- Can't post her gift since she posts here :)

Neighbors and friends (10 families)- either a tray of homemade candies or various home canned goodies.

T's Staff (about 45 people)- Handmade soap wrapped pretty with a handmade card attached.

Teachers- Gabe's teacher will get a tote bag or purse and Gavin's teacher is a male so he will get a big basket of homemade goodies since we know him well and he likes the food I make.

All other school staff that work with our kiddos (18 people)- handmade soap just like dh's staff will get.

I bought ipod shuffles for everyone. I only buy for 5 people (my parents, dh's parents, and my brother). So, I got 5 refurbished ones and dh is going to load them with music. I worked really hard making nice gift packages for everyone last year and they really seemed to go unappreciated so... I am not doing that this year.

I am also doing a Christmas letter and sending out cards. This is THE biggie for me.

Then, I have some friends I will be sending things to and a some local friends and their kids... so I need small, creative gift ideas for them that they will enjoy.

Yikes! It's Sept and I just bought my first gifts for Christmas. At this rate, I might possibly be staying home the week before Christmas instead of running all over for last minute items.

$600 budget (from Christmas Club savings)

Rough amounts planned:

$40 for tree
$150 for kids (we did $75 each last year - going to try to talk us down to $50 each this year)
$120 for parents/aunts ($40 each set)
$50 for siblings
$50 for friends
$50 for teachers/school gifts
$50 for co-workers
$25 for cards/stamps

Items bought:

Teacher gifts: spent $30 on Komen for a Cure Lunch Totes from Lean Cuisine - half of the purchase price goes toward cancer research which I thought was fitting since our K teacher is currently fighting breast cancer. Hopefully, these will be something practical that the teachers can actually use.

Total spent: $30

Love this thread.

We have a total of 15 kids & 9 adults just on my side. I am an only but grew up next door to my cousins (mothers sister) so we are all very close and so are our children. Also have dd’s 11th birthday on December 26th to plan for.

So far I am doing made by me totes for at least 5 of the girls with some good books inside and probably a Sigg bottle for 3 of the bigger boys. I have a few ideas for the adults and younger children but nothing set in stone.

ISO – Someone to embroider 5 names on tote fronts, play food – felt or wood.
Have to offer – Reversible hostess aprons, large red glitter calavera fabric for trade or sale

And then we have hubby's family.
5 couple/adult gifts-I want to make something but no ideas yet
7 teenagers-I have been doing a $20 gift card each but that's still $140 and who knows if they appreciate it. I'd LOVE ideas here...

Thanks for that idea! I just ordered some for the kids teachers. They are cute and the price is nice :) I posted on an earlier thread that I usually wait till closer to Christmas for shopping for the kids, but somehow I didn't realize I could shop for others now. (duh me!) I'm going to get all the gifts except for dh and the kids done early, I'll post my list later.

great thread.

who I buy for:

my kids-
want to sew them jammies (need my mom's help to do this, I cant sew very well!), 2 pair each.
books or art supplies

we draw names for 2 sides of my family. $50 limit.
Unless they specify something or I know they *need* something, I usually do food baskets. Made my aunt one last year with all Italian stuff-pastas, spaghetti sauce, pesto sauce, breadsticks, etc.

I also gave everyone a rice pillow. My sister loved her so much she wanted me to make her another one for her bday in Feb!

parents

3 sisters
1 brother

some ideas I have: bath salts (already have a ton made), recycled fabric bags, draft blockers made from recycled denim and dry beans (for those that live in older homes with iffy weatherstripping), rice pillows again, maybe just to sell to friends who are out of gift ideas....

I have a very large family that we "sometimes" buy for. I am proud of myself though, because I have actually started on some gifts!! I have made several pin backed and bobbie pin backed felted flowers. I had seen these several places lately and had some sweaters I had felted but not done anything with. ( If I knew how to upload pictures I would, but I seriously need to take a class!) They turned out really well though! My bad thing is that I give things away as soon as I make them and have a hard time keeping goodies for gifts. I have books set aside for the kids and found a great bunch of superhero goodies at the Target dollar section. I am planning on also making stamped coasters for many of the families we send to. I have also started making bags out of recycled plastic bags (check out fused plastic on the sewing thread) and plan to give some of those. My mom and sister and I are all really thrifty and so we usually swap great garage sale finds with eachother. I love getting a big box full of little goodies! Also, if you are into being "green" we try not to use wrapping paper. For the people I know that sew I wrap their gift in fabric. I also make fabric gift bags and we just swap them around.

I have:
**this one is spoken for***

A bunch of blanks and organic blanks - I have dresses that are sized 2, 4, 8, and 10 I think - those strappy tank empire waist dresses from Dharma that are brand new. I also have an assortment of organic lap tees (around 18-24m), some 2T tees, some 12-18 and 18-24 organic onesies as well if someone needs a couple for babies on their list and they'd like to embellish them. I also have some dharma dyes.

Lots and lots and lots of Groovy Girls and Groovy Girls clothes as well as Build a Bear (girly) stuff that is in excellent or like new condition.

Some haba fruits and veggies and maybe a couple of tins (sugar, salt) that type of thing.

Lipbalm tubes. Would love to trade these to someone who can make some without artificial colors for my girls in return for keeping 90% of them ;)

NIP Pedipeds sandals - size 6-12 and 12-18 mostly, fisherman style woven leather ones, totally giftable

Size 6 power rangers tee, pajamas, and beach towel NIP from Disneystore

MagiClips (little ribbon-covered clippies) - I can make these custom, too, depending on the availability of ribbon. But, I have a lot of ribbon.

A pair of Dannielle's earrings - teardrop shaped, like green fossil stone, NIP

My list:

DH & I don't exchange

Grandparents and parents are just getting pictures this year and no picking names in our families this year either.

Would love velvet/velour stockings, if anyone is making stockings this year.

rounded edge wooden toys, cars, trucks - unpainted style (mouth safe)
Anything from Welcome to North Star Toys (http://www.waldorfresources.net/nstoys/index.html)

Piper (3) size 4T - Pink

wooden camera
dolly cradle or moses basket with baby-sized blanket
baby doll clothes (bitty baby size or her waldorf dolly)
travel chalkboard or something she can play with - feltboard maybe?

Jameson (5) size 6 slim - Orange

tic-tac-toe travel game with the wooden letters and a small patchwork "quilt" - the ones people make?
scrapbook or journal (blank pages or lined pages - something cute and decorative outside - handmade or embellished would be fabulous).
lip balm
Webkinz (any)

Skylar (7) size 8 slim - Blue

tic-tac-toe travel game with the wooden letters and a small patchwork "quilt" - the ones people make?
scrapbook or journal (blank pages or lined pages - something cute and decorative outside - handmade or embellished would be fabulous).

scrapbook or journal (blank pages or lined pages - something cute and decorative outside - handmade or embellished would be fabulous).
lip balm
Webkinz (any except the pink poodle, which she got for her birthday)

shared gift ideas:

kid sized cooking and baking things, cookie cutters, apron(s), rolling pin - functional but small-sized (like at Ikea)

red, white checked cookbook for kids - the better homes and gardens kids cookbook or similar? Or something you can make on the computer (prefer easy, kid-friendly, veg recipes)

doll bed (like at Ikea - big enough for an American Girl)

American Girl sized clothes (handmade is fabulous, especially made to match pajamas or pajama bottoms for the girls)

Overnight bag(s) - something that zips up, preferably, that they can fit their pajamas, a change of clothes or two, and their special buddies in?

OOOH - those name pillowcases!!! With the names appliqued to the front like in the sewing forum? That would be AWESOME to have to take on all our trips. I'll add their names and favorite colors above.

Hmph. I still think it's too early for me to think about this (I have 2 birthdays to plan before I even think of Festivus!). But the catalog companies seem to want me thinking on it.

So... I'm think those little sleds from L.L. Bean.
If I can find a fake AG doll for Roro that looks like her (I see them all the time at the Goodwill), I can do matching dresses.
Patch is REALLY into Bionicles. I'm not going to overthink him. Just get what he wants.
Dylan is. Wow. Last year, it was a modest toy or two and a Farm Sanctuary adopt-an-animal. He might want to continue sponsoring his duck friend.

DH? I'm moving to fricking DC. I think that's quite enough. :p
My family? Gael reads here, so I ain't sayin'. Mom, Dad, and stepmom we usually try to do a joint gift from Gael and me and our families.

ILs are getting pics. I plan to bow out of the gift wheel. We won't even be there. Books for the kids on that side because I'm *that* aunt (and I know how many toys they get).

I don't know. I'm not feeling it yet. I'm more excited at the prospect of sponsoring some meals for the hungry and buying for another family than I am about making my family's list.

eta: my bah humbug self was at the Lego outlet today and bought about $70 for Patrick. Now, if he doesn't want it all (I asked what he was planning to ask for, but I got a couple other things), I'll have extra to donate to Toys for Tots. Last year, I spent $70 on just one lego set because it was discontinued, and I could only find it on ebay. I picked up 5 big sets today from clearance, and he specifically pointed to 3 of them (the other 2 were also Bionicle). Woohoo. Done shopping for one kid. :p

I am iso a microscope for Alex, and a puppet theater (the ones that go in the doorway) for Cyan. I would also love anything that people have for 19 year old girls.

I also have some Dharma stuff. Size 6 empire dresses, and some 6-12 mos romper blanks. Let me know if you would like to trade/buy them.
