I don't. I saw one that I really liked, though, and I'm sick of getting stuff splatted on my clothes. Although I haven't seen it at the store in a while.

I'd be kind of weirded out with the whole "right wing, fright wing" thing, but I don't think it has to be like that.

My son's friend's mother inherited about a dozen aprons. Her favorite one has those pompoms dangly from it. It's really strange. But she really likes it.

My other son's friend's most elegant mom has one in her pantry. I've never seen her wear it.

Anthropologie sells them.

Would I be driving my husband to 1950's housewife flashbacks, complete with cold sweats and shudders, or would I be doing a good thing?

For that matter, how do they fit? I'd hate that strangled feeling, like from lab aprons.

I have several that I wear when cooking or cleaning. For cleaning, it helps put me in the mood.

What does this mean? I've never heard that expression before and am curious.

edited to add: My favorite apron is from here:

Get a restaurant apron. Very utilitarian looking, and keeps you clean, without looking like a 1950's flashback.

Oh, want to see a 1950's flashback? This is me, after deciding I should have an apron, and requesting one in a swap. Holy moly. I look like the couch barfed. (not a very flattering pic, I just needed to show I received)

I still don't use an apron. :p (though, when I was a cook, I liked the restaurant style ones...don't feel like a hausfaru in them, lol)

Yep. I've been into aprons since I was a teen and started wearing my mom and grandma's old half aprons when I did the dishes. Now I have an awesome bib apron a good friend made for me, and it's my favorite for when I am really cooking up a storm, and I have a basic twill apron for just doing the dishes or heavier cleaning. Oh yeah, I have one in the trailer too. My dad bought it for DH but I wear it.

I had one I loved, vintage, but the fabric split so I need to trace it and make another one, which would require learning how to sew more than a straight line.

I still have one my mom made at an apron party (can you believe it ~ an apron party?), and I have a vintage yellow half apron that I bought to match my kitchen (it's not practical though). Then I have a more 50's style bib apron I bought (new from kitchsy fabric) but I feel totally silly wearing it.

So yes, I wear an apron, and for practical reasons. I think that's why the kitchsy one just doesn't do it for me. I even have a clothespin apron, and in a pinch at someone else's house I'll tuck a kitchen towel into my waistband because I hate to not have an apron on when I am cooking or doing dishes.

I wear a bib apron for cooking and cleaning if I didn't my clothes would be ruined. I found my aprons at Shopping at Rolling Pin Kitchen Emporium (http://www.rollingpin.com/). Dh actually likes me in an apron, but he is probably having those 1950's flashbacks:lol:

I need to. I have a couple utilitarian ones (blue with lots of pockets). I think I would like a more 50's-like one.

I saw some really cute vintage inspired ones at a pricey kitchen store this week. I ALMOST got one. It was very 50s. I love 50s aprons. I think you have to understand the difference between wearing one because you are expected to versus wanting to! They are super cute, I would be afraid of getting stuff on the apron!! LOL

i love wearing an apron. i love having the big pockets and not worrying about getting my clothes filthy.

I say just try wearing one and see what you think. It's funny the stereotypes that we allow to get in our way.

I have a Williams-Sonoma apron I wear daily. I am a mess in the kitchen, and if I don't wear it, my clothes WILL be stained!! I would really like to get a cutsy one though, the WS is pretty utilitarian. I don't think it gives me a 50's housewife vibe at all, for that I would need ot have my hair done and heels on too-which isn't happening!

I love aprons! '50's flashback or not, they are awesome to keep your clothes clean, dry your hands, keep tissues for wiping runny noses, keep your phone in, etc, etc, etc....
I wear a denim pampered chef one most days but I love to collect vintage and elegant ones. I also love the plain white restaurant ones.

Right wing, fright wing- Phyllis Schafly look alikes- the ugly fifties' housewife with the scary shellacked hair and the pinched face, and the really squinty cats eye glasses. Whenever the media tries to show the ugliness of the conservative/ nativist/ old- school type, they tend to show pictures from my hometown, Dallas, or thereabouts. So, right wing/fright wing.

Although the strangest hair style, ever, is from that genre. The woman had iron grey hair, (since hair color is for loose women and tramps (this gives you a flavor of the thought process, too)) The front part had its short, permed bangs, ratted high up. In the back, the hair was twisted up, and pinned, like usual, but the pinning!!!! She had, I'm serious, the hair twisted into coils, and the coils were pinned to her head- again standard, mind you, but in the pattern of stems, and flowers. Three stems growing from the base of her neck, and three coil roses, atop these.

I kind of have to be careful about this, since I am well aware that my instincts aren't towards the fashionable, tasteful and good. I really have to pay attention. And, apparently, the kids don't have particularly good style instincts either. The boys voted I should get a pair of capirs that literally make my stomach hurt every time I see them. They are bright pink, khaki and black, in a lurid floral print. Literally painful to look at. The boys love them, and wonder why I don't wear them.

And, things have to last about ten years, since the budget is touchy. So I can't really go chasing after the "this summer's hottest." Also, things don't disappear, either. So there's this really wretched hoodie teeshirt that is over ten years old. It was celery green ( $4 at purchase) and it faded over the years to a sort of not clean white- ish. Dispiriting to wear, esp since I don't like hoodies in the first place.

So, I have to do a lot of research. I have to do more research, too, on housewife things. It's been all of a month since I've sort of declared "SAHM" my job, and I am having nightmares. Forget that I haven't worked in a year, or been to school in a while longer, but I thought it was sort of an interlude, so I wasn't particularly doing a good job at it. So now I'm having to look at things, like napkins, and aprons, and menus, and things like that. Literally, horrible despairing nightmares.

i am a slob. i don't care for stereotypes. i don't care for grease/food-splattered clothing, either, especially since we're on a tight budget, too and i can't afford to just replace clothing (and my time for sewing new stuff for myself is severely limited).

so yes, i wear one. i have three, and my mother bought all three of them for me years ago. one of them is the Longaberger (like the baskets) Cookie Celebration apron - it's a heavy twill, has nice pockets and is generally a great apron. another one matches a kitchen towel i have - just a plain ol' plaid apron, but quite lightweight. that one's okay, but the adjustable neck thingy comes out all the time unless i tie a knot in it.

then there's the one i have that i never wear, but dh does (he doesn't care for stereotypes, either :p ) - it's white, mid-weight twill, and has pictures of flowering herbs on it :D it doesn't have pockets, which is why i don't use it.

if i didn't wear an apron when i cook, i'd be covered in ingredients and all my clothes would be stained. half the time i forget i have it on and take it off halfway through eating the meal i just cooked (which is why there's always an apron slung over the back of the chair next to mine). then i regret taking it off because i inevitably get food on myself while eating

all that being said - i don't get the half-aprons. how do they protect your clothes? or are they more for tall people? my waist line is below the stove/sink/counter, so they wouldn't offer much protection for me, except maybe against really runny/dripping things. i get the stains between the boobs and the waist, so i need full coverage :D

sometimes i get stuff in my hair, too...maybe i need a mobcap to go with my apron...i could maybe try a corset, too, to go for the full effect...although that would have to wait until after giving birth... ;)

Yes! I love aprons! I have a couple. They are all vintage. My favorite is one made by my great-grandmother that she wore all the time, then gave it to my mother. Last time I was home my mother gave it to me. It is a black and white gingahm bib style. It fits me perfectly and is actually incredibly sexy. My roommates (both boys) and bf love it! I also like wearing skirts to clean house. I pretty much wear skirts all the time though.

All this apron talk turns me on! I want to see more apron pics. I think I am going to try to take sexy pics of me naked in my apron for bf's birthday next week. I wonder what my grandmother would think...:hahaha:

I've been wanting to get one for a long time! I'm always wishing I had more/ bigger pockets for clothespins, toys, etc.

Big Mama Hughes - I think the half apron is more for the pockets! That's what I'd use it for anyway. And I think your husband must be a great guy to do the apron thing :D

When dd2 was about 2 months old and my nursin' boobs weren't fitting in any of my tshirts, I splurged on new tshirts from Old Navy. First, I never shop there. Second, I rarely buy things new and fullprice! Well, a day or two later I splattered coconut oil all over one! I was so mad and decided to buy an apron I would love to wear. Here's where I bought from:
BellaPamella - Retro, Vintage, Old-Fashioned, Classic & Bib Aprons for Adults & Kids (http://www.bellapamella.com/index.php)

They used to have another style that really tempted me, but I went with the Eunice and do really like it! The women in my family may see these under the tree this Christmas! If only I could sew, an apron can't be that hard...

he's the bomb :D he's not the biggest chore-do-er on the planet, but he has no problems donning an apron and cooking dinner. plus he does at least half the child care, more on the weekends. i wouldn't trade him for anything

Hokay, now I know what my blog title would be, were I to type a blog : Fish in the Middle.

Threads has just come out with an apron article, with links to an apron museum.

The Sunday NYTimes magazine has a picture of a rather frightening Frenchwoman in a black vinyl apron. Now, her house seems to have a great deal of vinyl in it. In a small trailer park, it would be evidence of trashiness; in Paris, evidence of avant chic. Oh yeah, she was preparing blue food- blue dyed fish roe roundmounded onto a marrow bone. It's the same blue as fine, high-quality Blue Jello. She's also lauded for little agar agar squares filled with peas and shredded carrots. I have seen that wobbling monster- an aspic ring filled with peas and carrots at every single family reunion I've ever been to. Where's the photographer and the loving memorialist for my grandmother???? My great aunt could do the frightening vinyl and hairspray thing. Really, she could.

And, apparently, amongst the bloggers and the Michelangelo's to and froing, there is some sort of apron contest/swap.

I like the ribbon tie on the emma one. That is really cute. I like the Eunice.

Unfortunately, I also like the white tie around one that goes on Etienne the Parisian waiter, esp when he's sitting there smoking, waiting for the first diners of the evening. Not smoking, not being Parisian, and not being a waiter....

Would a white one make me look like a Mrs Danver's style scary housekeeper?

You know, I have to get over this. I think Dh would be happy with a nice, girly girl housewife. I just cut my hair, and he's been angry at me for days..

I was growing it out, and all I could see in the mirror was this Andrea Yates wannabe. I looked drowned. I cut my hair, and I could see my eues again. I'm happy whenI look at myself.

Pink, with a hot pink ribbon....

I'm glad I stumbled upon this thread (I don't often brave to peek in super crunch) because I sometimes wonder when I do actually make something for someone do they really like it and does it get used. I don't sew for outside of family real often, because for family I whip things up, and when I'm mailing it I sew at a snail's pace and think it has to be perfect, LOL.

Oh, I made a kid sized one of the same material for my little one, but recently she decided it was too babyish for her and had me make a plainer one.

Here's a very old picture of me modeling it before I mailed it. I'm thinking this was at least two years ago if not longer. And if this isn't the apron you are talking about then it was someone else I made it for, and I'm embarrassed, LOL.

I will have hands on a computer tomorrow. A fast, fancy computer. whee-hoo... I want to see what's so cute.

I've decided an apron is a good thing. I'm keeping house more. I'm throwing out kid toys. The aggressive cleaning feels good.

Oh! I got the fantastic mop from the CleanFloorStore. That thing is spooky. It swipes the side of a puddle of milk- and it sucks up the whole puddle. Not, I wipe over the puddle a few times- no, I swipe a side of the puddle, and it all comes up. I did the whole entire kitchen the first day. It changed the color of the tile back to what it was when we bought the house ( 3 years!!! and 2 mops!!!! and a slew of hands and knees scrubbing!!!) Now, the floor has kitten piddle challenges, but it's baseline is clean, instead of, not clean.

I'm using a spray bottle of lavendar castile soap, lavendar oil, and tea tree oil. It's not overkill. It scents the whole house. Kids really do eat off the floor. The kitten eats off the floor. The kitten, and the baby girl, both pee on the floor. It needs heavy duty scrubbage and disinfection.

I am looking forward to seeing pictures. I tried to look at some pictures the other day, and the machine had a three day headache.

whee- hoo, fast fancy computer time coming up!!!

He watches Anchorman, and he's not laughing at the wife in apron scene.

How did she set that up? That is totally funny, and pitch perfect.:) Congratulations to her!

And if she gets a heavy breather on the phone- don't worry, he's far, far away, and too busy to fly to NY.
