I want a 50mm for the rest of this project. Is this adequate?

if you know it works on your camera (is a digital compatible lens) it's a good lens :) i use my 50mm 1.8 almost exclusively for portraiture.

well, crud - how do I know if it's digital compatible? :(

Okay, in the reviews there are two comments that they use it on a digital rebel
particularly over what the XT or XTi kit lens can provide. Keep in mind, for beginning photographers, that a fixed 50mm lens means you are in a perpetual mini-zoom (imagine your kit lens - 18mm-55mm - zoomed most of the way in).
But - I'm concerned about this...response to "how is this for a digital?"
It depends on the kinds of photos you take. On my Rebel XT, this doesn't see nearly as much use as a 28mm lens (which is roughly equivalent to a 50mm lens on a standard 35mm film camera).
However, given the price and the speed of the glass, it's hard to go wrong with this one anyway.
Meaning? Should I get a 28mm instead?

it means that it works for digital.
that post was a vent about the translation of focal point from digital to film cameras (because the sensor in the digital camera is smaller than 35mm so there is a slight difference. a 50mm lens on digital is roughly like a 28mm would have been on a film camera...BUT if you like the look of images from 50mm lenses, the crisp focus and soft background bokeh, it's a great lens. i personally love it. it's what i used on the baby/daddy arm photos and on the maternity photos a while back...heck it's probably what i've used on all the photos i've posted recently.)

Sandi, that's the one I got, from Amazon. I love it. :) I'm using it almost exclusively now, over the kit lens. I used it for my sig.

Would the 50 mm 1.8 work for the d40 /

Would the 50 mm 1.8 work for the d40 /
that i do not know.
the d40 has some lens incompatibilities compared to the d50 so i don't know really. i know the lens will WORK as in it will FIT and it will take nice photos...but i think you may need to manually focus it in order to use it on the d40...you may also need to manually set it's aperture.
on that lens the aperture control is on the lens (like older film SLRs), so you have to set the lens to allow the camera to control the aperture (in order to use it on any auto or program mode)...i'm not sure how that would work with the d40.
i'm sorry...i'm just not that familiar with the d40/d40x. i know the d50 inside and out and am *very* familiar with the d200 since it is what i'll probably be buying next...i actually know more about the d2x than i do about the d40 (since i've been researching upwards in order to upgrade kwim?)
maybe you could google the terms "d40 50mm 1.8 compatible" and see what turns up?
hth!

Just wanted to update to say that I got it and love it. I ended up picking it up at the local photog store (a girl needs a little instant gratification when faced with an MRI the next day) and it worked amazingly. It sucked all the light into the camera, even in the dim exam room (as you can see by my sig on the right). It's heaven. I wish I had gotten it when I first bought the camera.
Thank you for your input.

i've not decided. i'm kinda torn between waiting to see what they offer next in the way of a d300 or d200whatever, getting the d200 when that comes out (and the price drops) or getting the d200 later this summer.
in the last 2 months i have had 2 photographer (wedding) birth clients and both have had nothing but praise for the camera. one shoots with 2 d200's and the other has a d200 and a d2x.
it was a toss up when i got the d50 but due to my hands and our uncertain finances i opted for the less expensive d50...but could get a d200 body almost any time if i wanted it now. i'm trying to decide if i want it or want to wait and see what's next...or if i want it alone (body) or if i want to save up and get another lens with it...or...or...or...
initially i wasn't sure i'd get a return on my investment and with things so uncertain for us $$ last year after he lost his job i'm glad i went the way i did...but the d50 has paid for itself multiple times over now. i definitely feel like i can justify the expense of another (higher-end) camera now with what i'm bringing in just from my work with the d50. i'm glad i took the time to learn it backwards and forwards though...it was a good camera to transition me from film to digital.
i don't foresee me getting a d2x or comparable though...i don't have a need for that high-speed of a camera (frames per second). i don't do sports beyond kid sports and really...if a d50 can get me what i need, a d200/d300 will do that much better.
eh. you can see i'm still not sure which way i'm going but i am going up soon. while i'm deciding i'm spending a bit getting my workspace set so my workflow is smoother and organized... :D i'm definitely staying nikon though.
my nikon's been good to us ;) we don't even feel the drop in dh's pay any more. it's been a good year. (of course my work with your mom helps a bit too :joker: )
