My dd is 4 and has friends that go to public school. I want to support the kids and go to concerts, fundraisers, etc. but, my very outgoing dd talks about going to school and I have to keep telling her that she homeschools and how cool it is/is going to be.

What do you do?

We do go to some functions that my childrens friends are involved in, but not a lot. It has not really phased my children and my dd even says that most of her PS friends say they wish they were homeschooled!

Well we're not typical as we only hs one, but we did go to the science fair that my dd2's ps friends were in at her former school. Concerts, etc are usually open to the public, so I wouldn't have a problem going even if all my kids were hs'd.

My concern isn't with the school and if they care if we are there or not. My concern is that by going to these events it is making my dd want to go to school more and more. I guess it is an individual thing. Just wondering how others handle the situation.

I see it more like a cultural event. We also go to events at the university in town.

I think it depends on your kids. My kids will always see the grass as greener on the other side, so regardless of what we're doing they'll wish they were doing the opposite. Since I've made the decision to homeschool them, I have to limit their exposure to public school "fun" and maximize their homeschooling experience. Some kids I think can handle it fine, but not mine!

I limited our exposure to PS "fun" in the beginning, you just reminded me of that!! I didn't want the hassle of the "grass is greener"syndrome. When we started having more homeschool gatherings and functions, my children see how fun it is to be doing what we are doing!!

I was a PTA president an we welcomed home school children. We also have a program that home school children can come for PE, Music and Art. Look in to it you may have the same program!

The only ps activities that I know welcome hs'ers in our school district are band and choir for 6th-12th grades. My dd2 will start band in the fall.

What state are you in? I think it depends on local/state rules as to who allows homeschoolers to do certain things. Welcome to the boards!! Looking forward to your intro!

Thanks!! This is what I was wondering!!

As for going to the public schools, in WA your kids can do anything at school they want and still be homeschooled.
