Hi All!

I came home yesterday from an estate sale with a wonderful Singer 403 Slant-o-Matic in a full table, along with a 3-drawer sewing table full of notions. The woman was a seamstress and was paid to sew on the the name and US Army labels on uniforms. Anyhooo, one of the drawers was full of patterns (both vintage and from the 70-80s) for quilting, crosstitch, and iron-on embroidery/needlepoint patterns. There are definitely some I want to keep, but does anyone just die for these and/or want to give them a good home? I am pretty sure I could get all the transfer patterns in a $4.05 flat rate mailer. There are lots of kids motifs, as well as some "flapper" ones from the 20s.

Anyone interested?

Let me know! I can take some pics if you want as well.

I just wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS on your awesome estate sale find! I have a Singer 401 Slant-o-matic, and a 500 too, and I just love them! Just for grins, how much did you pay for it? I wish I had a table for mine.

What other goodies did you find in the table's drawers?

Anne,

Thanks for appreciating the score. I currectly have a 301 and a 503, but this was a terrific machine and I couldn't pass it up! I paid $50 for the machine, table, and sewing stool/storage -- all full of goodies! Wahoo!

I got the manual, all the attachments including a buttonholer, the stitch disks (what are those called), and bunches more which I think include all the original tools that go with it. I went through the sewing stool, but the machine's table is next! I will keep you posted.

I also had to mention that I almost exploded when I saw a Featherweight at a sale this weekend. Unfortunately, it looked as though the machine and case had been submerged (and sat) in water at some point. Definitely wasn't worth the $85 they wanted for it. Sigh....

You ever come near me in Carson City, I have an extra vintage Singer desk just sitting in my garage that would fit either of your machines. Yours free if you wanna come get it....<grin>!

Oh, Lori! Don't tempt me with your cabinet!! I might just ditch my family and take a road trip on my own! ROFL

$50 for that machine, table, stool, and accessories is AMAZING!! I am happy dancing for you!

the stitch disks (what are those called)
aka "top hat cams". Did you get a full set of those?

Too bad about the Featherweight. $85 would have been a real bargain if it hadn't been ruined. I paid $100 for mine which I think was a good deal even though it is a little cosmetically challenged (underneath the bobbin winder only). Great little stitcher.

I am envious of your 301. That is number one on my wish-list right now. Which color is yours? Short or long bed?

I just love vintage Singers.

Ooh, just to make it more interesting -- I have a spare longbed tan 301 that needs a new home! It needs a new light cover and extension bed (long story got broken in the mail). Both are readily available on eBay If you wanna, you can have it for a song and free table, too! Hee hee! Come on up!

The 301 I use is a black long bed that I bought for $200 when I first started sewing. That think just can't be stopped no matter what I throw at it!

I have found several 301s at yard sales -- one I got for $5 and all it needed was a good cleaning, oiling, and greasing! Keep your eyes out, you never know. Also check craigslist (craigslist: san francisco bay area classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events (http://www.craigslist.org)) in your area and look at all the vintage machines. I got another 301 on there for $25 -- people don't konw what they have. Just be sure to go to your city (on the right side of the page) before you search!

You evil temptress! You just happen to have a spare 301. LOLOL I'm mighty tempted but I think I'm going to hold out for a black one (or maybe a two tone to match my 401). I'm up to 16 machines now and I've run out of space for them so I need to start limiting myself to only those models I most want.

Thanks for the reminder about Craigslist. I was checking it a while back, but I need to remember to do that again, and more often. I did find my 201 in a cabinet on Craiglist a few weeks ago. I paid $150 for that setup which I thought was a little high, but it came with a vintage "penguin" walking foot. Those are so hard to find they go for BIG bucks. I would never have one if I had had to buy it online. Anyway, it turns out I love that 201. It's really pretty and quiet and smooth. Considering what you get for $150 in a new machine nowadays, I think that 201 was a bargain. It belonged to a 92 year old lady named Exie who had been a home economics teacher. She bought it new in 1948, if I recall correctly. Both the machine and the cabinet are in very nice shape.

I did see a 301 on Craigslist a few months ago (before it was number one on my wishlist) but they were asking $140 so I passed it up. After seeing what they're going for on ebay, I know that was a reasonable asking price (it was two tone 301 and it came in a cabinet) but at the time I was more interested in finding a Featherweight 221. Right now I've spent all my play money for a while, so I will only be looking for a really great bargain and it has to be a model on my wish list (which is pretty short now). I should go to estate sales. I wish there were more of them around here. And the thrift shops don't seem to have sewing machines. Well I did see one once but they overpriced it by a lot.
