These shorts match the shirts I've made for DS recently - it used up all the rest of the mossy-green jersey - only had enough material to put in one pocket instead of 2. They fit great - I'm going to be making up a bunch of these in different colors - for some reason I can only find 3 pair of shorts in this house that will fit him this summer - my older DS must have worn the rest of them out, or maybe I cleaned a little too thoroughly! :D

Those look comfy. :)

Can I ask what pattern you used? I'm a bit knit-challenged and I've recently been gifted some lovely yellow knit. I want to make my dd a short/tank set for the summer, but I kinda goofed the tank I made. So, I'm not sure how well the shorts are going to be.

Any tips or advice?

I just used the Simplicity 9499 pattern for the shorts - it's the same one I used for the raglan top... but for the raglan top I've made a lot of adjustments to the pattern (using some patternese for tracing). The shorts are straight tracings - no adjustments made. The top I had to shave off some of the top of each of the pieces (sleeves, back, front) because the neck was way too wide, plus I lengthened the long-sleeves by 2 inches and the body by 3 inches for my long lean 7-yr-old. Some people think that the "big three" patterns are really weirdly sized, and I'm inclined to think they may be right. Kwik-Sew patterns are more highly spoken about - so that's one tip - make sure your pattern is a good one unless you're willing to spend the time & fabric tweaking it.

My other big tip for sewing with knits on my old Kenmore sewing machine (no serger here) was given to me by MartinAnne - use a stretch needle. Especially if you're sewing rib knits. I was getting SO many skipped stitches before. Now very few. And the jersey knits I've not gotten any skipped stitches with... yet!

Perfect shorts! Don't you love it when you use up the last of a fabric in your stash? Unless of course it was some print you adore and can't find any more of...!

And I'm very happy stretch needles are working for ya! Being able to sew with knits opens up a whole new world of fashion sewing, doesn't it?
