Do we get a point for each square of a quilt, if they're done with cut pieces of fabric (rather than strip-piecing)? I am in the middle of putting together a dog quilt with 42 squares - does that mean 42+ points just for the quilt-top?
What about binding... I realize that binding counts as a notion in the instructions Michelle put together... but I usually like to make my own binding, rather than use the packaged stuff. If I have to buy fabric specifically for the binding *only* (no extra), then does that count as *fabric* bought (which counts against me), or does it count as *binding* bought (which is a notion and doesn't count against me). Then when I use it in the quilt, is it *fabric*, or *notion*?

My understanding was that quilt squares counted as scraps IF they were different fabrics and had previously been obtained. For example the quilt square swap/ I-spy ones count as individual scraps because they often don't get used for quilts. If I were to cut out 4 patch blocks from 5 or 6 different fabrics and then use them I would count yardage. BUT that's my understanding from earlier stash games and it may be much different this time. I'm more than happy to go edit my ABC quilt calculations. :)

I thought it was 1 point for scrap in general, not 1 point per scrap used. ETA: no wait, I guess I did count 1 point per scrap used as well. So go with that.
On the quilts I thought the binding would count as a notion if it's a notion you bought but as yardage if you used fabric to make your own binding. I also thought whether you count the pieces as scrap vs yardage depends on if you are using random scraps of fabric from say your scrap bin or if you purchased say a fat quarter specifically for quilting.
Clear as mud?

Regarding the quilt top: I asked this question during the last SG over on SM:

Otherwise known as NOW is the time to use those swap squares :D You don't get to count the duplicates, but boy it makes piecing a lot more palatable.
I just wish I had more projects planned with them. I spent 6 hours last night painting a central medallion for my nephew's quilt. I think I get a whopping 1 notion point for the paint :p

It's too bad that we can't count duplicates. They're still being sewn up, and they're still being used up (which is part of the stash game objective).
I think we should count all squares even if they're duplicates. Anyone want to give some feedback? Maybe I'm missing the reason why we shouldn't be counting dupes?

The reason was to avoid someone taking a large scrap and cutting it into smaller scraps (every time you cut it it would become a new scrap.) *Just to clarify, this isn't how I have ever done scrap points. I count the scraps as they are before I begin cutting* It can get a bit ridiculous-- believe me, I'm the QUEEN of scrap points. :D Thus, the current version of the rule is to allow for a multitude of different fabrics but not have the same piece counted multiple times.
The reason for scrap points is to allow a way to easily count a small bit without you having to calculate that its 1/68th of a yard or something. A scrap is defined as anything without both selveges intact.
I am not planning a lot of scrap projects this time around, and I honestly don't manipulate the rules, but I enjoy figuring out the best use of my time and in games past, I have angered others because I tend to make a lot of very scrappy patchwork, its just how my stash is composed and the type of sewing I do by nature. I'm certainly part of the reason for the continually evolving scrap point rules :)
Quilts are a great deal of work and getting lots of points for them is nice, but sewing a formal or one of Chole's garb pieces is also fussy, tedious work for far less points then you'd get hemming a tablecloth. The reason to not count more points in quilt blocks is to avoid having to readjust other rules to weight other projects based on the amount of time involved.
I'm all for counting all the blocks, duplicate or not, but its a can of worms. Just fyi.

 too bad we don't get points for all the *****ing we do while sewing.
I love your description of a "scrap" Hastings. That needs to be added to the rules for sure!
A scrap is defined as anything without both selveges intact.
For me, I keep a scrap bag and anything that is a really odd shape goes in the bad. If I dig around in the bag and manage to make something then I count it as scrap. Of course, not everyone has a scrap bag.

Ahh okay, thanks for the explanation Hastings. It made me :( to read that others have been angered by your use of scraps. I think that when playing a game like this, one has to make it worth her time as to what she wants to make. Some people just play to motivate themselves and don't mind the low points they earn for certain items, and then there are others who are playing to win. I would never want hard feelings over a game, competition or not. So the scrap points rule stays as is. :) Hope that wasn't too pushy to declare that
Seriously though, if anyone has strong feelings in the other direction, please PM me or start another thread about it so we can discuss further. :)

I really didn't mean to make a big deal out of it - I just didn't know the rules and hadn't heard that using pre-cut quilt blocks could net so many points (I don't follow the stash game on sewingmamas because it gets too overwhelming for me). I certainly wouldn't get mad at anyone over their use of scraps or any other way they choose to gain stash points - what would be the point?
I did find some stash fabric I *could* use for my quilt binding, but OTOH since it's a commission, I want to be sure the recipient is happy with it - it's not just about stash! :) so I may end up buying 1/2 of a yard anyway. We shall see!
