View Full Version : A big family appliance!

When we purchased our home almost 3 years ago, we got a HUGE fridge. I don't know why, really, but we couldn't resist. Now, I find that when we do enough shopping we need to use the fridge downstairs as well. We got an apartment sized one to keep down there for cold beverages. With a split level house and lots of birthday parties in our family, we tend to have visitors down there. I can't have my precious fridge space wasted by bottles of water, cans of soda, and beer!
So, we bought two fridges.
Then, last year we decided to add an upright freezer, which I think is an essential thing for any big family!!! Whether you buy a half a cow at a time or use it to store the garden's harvest from the previous summer, a freezer is key!
So, when our dinky little stove that came with the house puttered out on us yesterday we decided to go full tilt and get the double oven range!
My new baby has FIVE - count 'em - FIVE burners and TWO ovens that can heat at different temperatures :cuc:
NOW I'm prepared to cook for an army! LOL
If I can just figure out where to put another washer and dryer!
(Hey, at least they're all energy star!) :)
What do you have in your house that makes the ship run smoothly?

we went with a fridge only. there is no freezer side because we have an upright freezer and didn't need the dinky one that comes in a fridge. we also have a little dorm fridge for soda and beer.
we have to buy a new microwave. dh and I can't decide on which one to get. yes, it is a necessity here...
oh! and I have a top loading machine with no agitator. that was the best purchase I ever made! And, they spin super dry so the dry time on a *full* load (about 15 towels) is only 40 minutes.

I have a front loading washer and super=-size dryer. Can't even remember the make/model but it was a life saver!! Mountains have been climbed and conquered with those babies!
We have 2 fridges too. The one in the kitchen doesn't have a freezer but the one in the laundry room does. Someday I will have to get a deep freezer again.
We keep joking that when we build, we want a Hobart dish washer, like in restaurants!!! I may not be kidding~
Most of our appliances still stink but we make do until we build... hoping that is sooner than later!

We upgraded from a 19cuft fridge to a 26cuft bottom freezer french doors one!! I LOVE IT! I can do our shopping and barely take up half the fridge!! I used to have to shove stuff around.
We have a deep freeze in the garage.
We also got the front load Affinity w/d.....again, LOVE THEM!!

We have a fridge in the house that has the fridge part on top and the freezer below. Much better at finding things in it. Have a huge upright freezer in the garage and a second fridge as well. Have two washers and dryers. I need a bigger range though. We are buying a new house so I think we will switch then. Tell me about your range, what brand?

Two summers ago I bought a 25.5 cu ft fridge w/freezer on the bottom. I absolutely love it. It has the french doors on the top, too. NOTHING gets lost in that baby! We also live in base housing, so we have the base's fridge, which is ok - and we use both of them. I don't know what I will do when we eventually don't have 2 fridge's! lol Actually, I think I will end up getting a stand alone fridge and a stand alone freezer for the huge kitchen I will have. (ha!)
Also - I just got the new Whirlpool Cabrio washer and dryer (in black). It does EVERY bath towel in the house in one load. It also has supersonic spinning so things come out almost dry. Oh, and all the jeans for the whole family can go in and we still have a lot of room left, too. I absolutely love that washer/dryer.
Oh - and my favorite new toy... not really an appliance... a 37 inch flat panel tv. When we move in June, it will be mounted to the wall - and then it will be even cooler. LOVE the widescreen and the HDTV. Really, I love my tv. (I know, sad) And I also love the Wii. Yes, me the one who said I would never have a game system in the house... I absolutely love it.

Oh, thats awesome, I'm jealous! I am seriously depbating where we should pull the stovetop and add a regular stove/oven where the stovetop was. Then I'd have 2 ovensLOL (we have a wall oven and stovetop in the counter)
I woulf love t washers and dryers too. actually I'd jsut like a new washer and dryer that worked well.LOL One day!:) We did have an extra fridge, but we just put it in the rental house b/c they didn't have one, so i'm on the search for another really cheap one.

I don't think anything. We live in a small 3 bedroom in the city. We have a front loader washer and dryer. Our fridge could be larger, but we are in a rental, and would have to get the rental company to take the fridge we have right now out, they will do it as that is what they did when we moved here and had our own washer and dryer, right now I have better things to do then go out and buy a fridge. Most of the places we have thought about buying don't have large kitchens, because we are staying in the city. The only place that had a large kitchen was an embassy that was being sold, but it was out of our place range by $300,000:) It also had 8 bedrooms, a lot of bathrooms, all in an older home.

When we bought this house we opted for the large side by side fridge. I really can't see a need for any more than what we have atm. But I do dream about large capacity washer and dryer, front loading so I can add a counter above for folding laundry. My laundry room is double duty with my downstairs bathroom.
Does a minivan count as an appliance? LOL. That is my new thing. I had to get one because my truck couldn't take anymore carseats. :( I miss my truck. But I guess a minivan or even full sized van is a necessity with a large family.
Your range sounds heavenly. I do love to cook. In my condo we had two ovens and I really miss that at the holidays. I really really miss my gas range in the old house as well. I need appliances I can beat on, not this sissy ceramic top that I have. (sorry, not meaning to offend those that love them).

I had tons of stuff in NC, but now its just my washer/dryer (HE3T). We're in a 2 bedroom rental until we find a place to buy. I'll just dream for now! That's Hawaii for you.

Do you know how hard it is to cook a stovetop meal on this thing? All I HAVE are big pots because we need them!

Oh yeah, second fridge is a necessary thing. And we just got a HE4T last year with some money out of a re-fi - was given a great high capacity dryer  . Our stove isn't big, but it does have a flat top, and I think that's a big-family treat, since as soon as your children are old enough to cook, there won't be the spill issues or safety issues of the open burners. Love that thing.
But most of all . . . 15 passenger van :D .
I *do* want a freezer, too!
And I always watch the thrift stores for industrial-sized pots, pans, etc, as I've found quite a few there over the years.

Still in love w/ mine almost 6 years later. Although it is getting old now, we bought it used, so starting to have a few issues.

I love my Suburban, my HE4T (I can do all the laundry in 2 days!) and lately, my aroma ice cream maker. Got it for $35 at Target. It makes 2 quarts of ice cream, has a hand crank option (fun for the kids for about 20 mins, lol) and an electric option (to finish the ice cream when the kids get tired). We go through ice cream by the quart in one sitting, so this is great and can be made organic for cheap!
Also love my 14 c cuisinart food processor. I go through phases of not using it as much, but man it's nice to have when I want it.
Also have an extra fridge and upright, it's a must.
Not an appliance, but I really dig my lard buckets with lids, lol. It gives me a sturdy container to put my 25 lbs bags of flour, rice, sugar, etc in. BUying staples in bulk is a godsend for the humungous appetites around here.

We love our HE3T washer/dryer set. And we have a huge chest deep freeze. I'd almost rather have an upright freezer, but it's like extra counter space. I don't know what we'd do w/out it.
We have 3 computers -- one is mine and I do all the hs stuff on it, one is dh's and the laptop is dh's for when he deploys.
I just got a Kitchenaid stand mixer and love it. How did I live this long w/out it? It sits next to the food processor, which I use a lot too. And we have a huge griddle. I can make a quadruple batch of pancakes pretty quickly on it -- grilled cheese, quesadillas, etc too.
I keep telling dh we should invest in a big fridge w/a water dispenser. We spend almost $100/mo on bottled water. We have it delivered in 5 gal bottles, but it's a necessity here where the faucet water is nasty. I think we could take a whole year's water budget and get a fairly nice fridge. Maybe one of these years I'll talk him into it. ;)
We're in post housing, so can't do much about the stove situation. We do have a big toaster oven, and can cook something extra in there in a pinch.
