View Full Version : Do you drive alot for your job? or not at all?
Just curious because people seem to be surprised with my car search lately (I'll probably buy a new-to-us used car in about six months for my job) that I drive for my work.
I'm a behavior health professional and I plan to spend about 20 hours of my 40 hour work week visiting my consumers in their homes. Some will live in apts, homes, others in residential settings. I'll visit others in the hospital, attend staffings and on occasion probably visit some folks in jail. I'll be driving alot. We are reimbursed for mileage so its not terrible, especially if you don't mind driving.
Even at the next level up I'll drive 10-12 hours per week (I'm hoping to promote in about six months too) or if I go to the training dept its still about that because the training dept is 45 minutes each way from my house (not reimbursable lol) but I'd also be going to the different clinics (22 of them) to train people on site.
So my answer is yes. I drive alot for my job.
You?
and spinoff will be of course - what do you drive?
Right now I'm still in my 98 Ford Windstar minivan but I'm hoping for a smaller vehicle by summer.

30 minutes (20 miles each way). In the spring I will have to do inspections so I will be going all over my region but I can take a state car if I want to-if not I get milage.

It takes me an hour to get to work and an hour to get home.
I have a 2006 Toyota Sienna.

I drive about 15 miles to work and back. The only driving I would do as part of my job (other than there and back) is when I have to go to court (I'm a psychologist and occassional am called as an expert witness).

I drive a whopping 1.5 miles to work each morning, for a total of 7 minutes drive time in the AM. lol! Sometimes the looooong ride home in the afternoon takes 10 whole minutes with the traffic.
I wouldn't have it any other way- I abhor commuting, can't manage much time in the car (which is weird really, since I love road-tripping when we are on vacation!)
I drive a 1995 toyota camry wagon named Zoe.

Not any more. When I was a Product Support Enginner, I drove to customer sites here in Silicon Valley on a regular basis, so it was additional 100 or so miles a week.
Now I just drive to and fro - 10 miles (which sometimes is 45minutes, CA you know) each way.

I drive to work about 45 minutes away and back, it is a pretty drive through the country though, no traffic jams to worry about.
Sometimes I need to go to our main office and I have to go to the bank periodically.
I drive a 2006 saturn vue.

Adding on. Though I only have about a 15 mile commute (about 20-25 minutes as it is all city driving), I continuously fantasize about moving my office closer to home. The intersection where my gym has been developed is about 5 miles from my home. They are in the process (the intersection) of developing the land and I am hopeful that they will include professional office space. If they do, I'm moving. Probably won't be for at least a year as they are only breaking ground right now.
That would put me a very short walk to my gym (so on a day like today when I have a couple cancellations, I could go workout), 2 miles from Jonathan's daycare, and 5 miles from home. I would like that very much.

I commute to and from the school I teach at. Roundtrip (each day) it is 60 highway miles.

I'm about 5 miles away on the freeway. We're a one car family right now so it's good that I'm on the way to dh's work/school.
When the weather's nicer I plan on biking more, as that's fairly easy to do.

I'm a doula and a Pampered Chef consultant (not at the same time ;) )
I drive to doula interviews, client meetings for prenatal discussions, meet them at any hour day or night when in labor at their home, to hospital and home again. My clients are sometimes local and sometimes as far as 1.5hr away. Hope ~ Dream ~ Birth (http://www.hopedreambirth.com)
For Pampered Chef I do most everything over the phone except driving to the show itself- again that's local and then upto 45mins away.
Welcome To My Personal Web Site (http://www.pamperedchef.biz/northwest)
So big variables month to month as to how much driving I do but we too just bought a car for our 'commuter' car. Dh uses it when he drives to client onsite jobs (usually he works from home, with some exceptions, he owns his own computer biz Inikus Consulting (http://www.inikus.com)). Whomever is home with the kids needs to have the van. We have an old mini pickup that was dh's work car to drive, and is good for hauling stuff when needed. With the Toyota Corolla we just got (199? 6 I think) we technically have enough seats for the whole fam if needed but more importantly its got better gas mileage, storage space, comfort, and safety for me when going to shows and births.

It's about a 60 mile round trip for work, which is about an hour each way (bay area traffic).

I'm starting to drive less & working from home but at one time I drove to my sites every week. And my 2001 Saturn Wagon shows it with 114,000 miles on it and oil changes every 6 weeks.
And even if you do get mileage it still costs $ and if you were in a wreck your personal insurance would have to cover it, not company so you might want to go ahead and admit to your insursance that you're using your car for work. But that will cost $$.

It tends to take me about 10 minutes to drive to or from work. Fifteen if traffic is heavy. I wouldn't be willing to work farther away from where I live. I got an offer for a job that pays $1/hr more than what I have now, but it's on the other side of the city and I don't do rush hour San Antonio traffic unless I just have to.
Funny thing is, I have actually applied for a job as a WIC counselor that would entail driving all day long to folks' houses. I will reapply as soon as I can. :) I'd love to have that particular job.
DH drives all day long; he's a drain tech for Roto Rooter. Since he has to drive a van, he uses at least $100/wk for gasoline. He travels not just in the city but the whole county and several surrounding counties. He's had a couple of jobs that were 2 hours one way to get there (and then one day he had 5 jobs within about 10 blocks of each other).
I have a '95 Ford Taurus station wagon, & Rob has an '01 Chevy whatevertheheck cargo van. I usually spend about $20 on gas a week, if that. I love my mileage & my cruise control.

Depending on what time I have to leave, it takes anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour to get to work.

The drive ain't pretty.

I drive about a hour round trip to and from work every day but i also drive a lot for my job. the mileage and time varies weekly. if i'm in court, it's only a block or two away but if i have to do a home visit in another town, it can be another hour round trip. a lot of us try to combine home visits that are in the same town to cut do on mileage/gas (and boredom-lol) and we do get paid mileage but i drive a mini van. i'm looking for a small car to use for work though.

it takes the same amount of time whether I drive to work or walk to walk - a mere 4 blocks away. That was intentional. I love living/working in the same neighborhood, really gives me a sense of community. I do drive to work somedays so that I can run work-related errands (bank/post office).
I drive whatever is available that day - a toyota sienna, an ancient toyota corolla, or the babysitter's car.

I drive to work and it's about 10 min's sometimes it takes longer but that's just because I have a good book playing. (ND traffic) I would love to ride my bike but I just relized that I need to get back in shape if I want to do that so maybe this summer.
I use to drive 80 miles round trip but I would go before 6am and leave before 3pm so that worked out pretty good. That was Seattle traffic. That's how I got hooked on audio books. They are amazing.

I work from home unless I have to go to our datacenter. That's a 10-15 minute drive one way. But that is only when we have issues with remote access our are setting up new customers, so it's maybe 2-3 times a month.

i work all over L.A. county and can spend anywhere from 30 minutes to 2+ hours in the car driving to a location. i drive a Dodge Durango and spend a fortune on gas---though I trade cars with dh whenever possible--he has a chevy S10...and he drives 14 miles roundtrip for work.......i work with children who work in entertainment and advertising-- that puts me in sound studios, theaters(like disney hall), and a zillion production studios around town +++ on site locations. i can write off mileage and I get paid extra if i leave the 'free zone'--- basically the county.
