The weather has been so nice lately and has melted the snow away from my garden bed that its inspired me to make a plan of when, what, and how to plant my summer garden! I'm going to be square foot gardening again this year, and I have two plots, one is 16 squares and one is 9.

In the 16 foot garden:

soybeans
sugar snap peas
thai hot peppers
mohawk peppers
scallions
cucumbers
garlic
squash (winter)
cherry tomatos
raspberries
honeydew
watermelon
rhubarb
cantaloupe

Haven't planned the 9 foot yet, its a more shallow box, so I might just grow herbs in there.

I need to plan the days of harvest and what to plant after harvesting. I am so excited!

I am. I am in the process of digging up dirt right now. (Just bought the house last summer.) I was thinking last night, I better plan it before I get any further. I want raised beds. We have pesky gophers so I need to put some chicken wire down first (I think). I dont know much about gophers though. I just know we have a few in our yard and I would hate to see my plants pulled! I am getting a late start! Wah. We live on the coast of California and you can pretty much grow like year round. I have never grown soybeans before and the kids and I just love them. How easy are they?

this will be the first year I do soybeans, they are selling the seeds in the park seed catalog, and I thought it would be fun to try.

Soybeans are good homegrown, but they tend to be smaller and less full than the ones they grow for the grocers.

I am working on being patient right now with my garden. I am an addict, and it is a big part of any healing for me... and now, having this baby in Jan I have a few months before I can really do anything. :( But... that will give me time to recover, and then I can get my dump truck load of dirt and not get yelled at for trying to move it. ;)

As for planning, I need to move my tomato spot this year, and also switch my peas and beans to another place. My currents are in the ground this year, so hopefully we will get more.

Hummm... now I need to go pull out my books.

 I already started planting! I'm in California, and last year I started "on time" by all the planting guides, then got so busy with Ren Faire, then it got really hot earlier than usual, and it was too late to plant seeds and my lettuce bolted. We had some beautiful weather the first of the year, so Jan 8, I put in a square each of lettuce, onions, and radishes, and two of calendula. That weekend, we got this freaky cold snap, with snow even-- we NEVER get snow. We'd bought straw bales, so I put a flake over the planted squares each evening, and pulled them off in the morning, and whoo hooooo! I have 6 out of 9 radishes up, 5 lettuces (must've dropped an extra seed), and 3 or 4 calendulas.

I harvested some lettuce seeds last year, and put them out on paper towels the other day to see if they'd sprout, and they're sprouting! It's raining now, so it looks like if I want to put them in the ground, I'll have to do it in the rain!

Yeah, but when your garden is lush and providing you with food, mine will be dying because of the heat! My lettuce will be bolting and everything. We should post pictures, say, the end of June? People will be amazed at the difference.
