I have a serger and a regular sewing machine. I haven't used my serger in several years because I hate changing the thread all the time. I'd like to start using it more frequently. Do you change the color out with each new thing you sew, or do you pretty much just keep one color there (or two: light and dark)?

When I was building my serger thread stash, I would just buy 2 cones of basic colors and use regular sewing thread that matched the material in the 2 needle positions (you use much less thread in the needles than the loopers). You could start with black, white, and gray then build from there.

I have white, black, red and greay in serger cones.... I don't care if the thread matches exactly but some sewers do. I have several friends who use regular spools if they wish to match color but do not want to fork over the cash for cones.

I have a ton of colors. That's not the issue. It's just a PITA for me to change it because I'm not all that skilled at changing it. Guess it isn't a huge issue as it really only takes a few minutes.
Okay, gotta break out the serger.

Are you tying on the new colors or are you unthreading and rethreading the whole thing? I just turn down my tensions, tie the new colors on, pull the threads through........on the needle threads I cut before the eyes and those are the only thing that I need to "thread" is the two needles.
Not sure if this makes sense - PM me if you need better instruction.
GOTTA USE THAT SERGER!!!!!!!

I forgot about this tip!! Woohoo!! I've only used a serger a couple of times, and had no probs threading it, but I just got a new serger for myself, and was thinking about all the times I am changing thread left, right and center on my conventional machine, and gulping.

 I never rethread unless a thread breaks in the middle of the "action". I always tie on, serge through. :D

Honestly, I just use cream colored cones of thread in my serger. Back in the day I used to have various colors of wooly nylon and etc. Now I just keep the same threads in, all the time.

yeah, just learn to tie on...it's so much easier. But...I've also learned how to rethread one without having to rethread them all (like if my looper threads run out or break).
