without a big snap press? A friend of mine wants to make some things for the baby (including diapers and hopefully covers), but I don't want her to have to buy a snap press.

What about a Snap setter (http://www.sewbaby.com/notions1c.html)? Would something like that work? Its WAY cheaper than buying a snap press, only thing is you'd have to use metal rather than resin snaps.

metal snaps can corrode. You can send them out to be snapped by someone who has a press, but the double shipping can really get you.
