Dh and Gabe love a good steak and Gavin, Gwen, and I love crab legs. Both are pretty pricey so we only do surf and turf once or twice a year. Since we have decided to make a tradition of spending New Year's Eve at home as a family we decided to instill some traditions one of which is a fancy expensive dinner.

For dinner tonight we had a couple lbs. of king crab legs, New York strip steak, seasoned roasted taters, corn on the cob, and multi grain baguette dipped in olive oil that has been infused with fresh garlic, italian seasoning, and salt.

It was a great dinner though my hands are a bit tired and sore from cracking all that crab. The kids asked why we didn't have crab more often and I said it is because I can normally make 3 dinners for the price of the one dinner tonight. It amazed me how understanding they were of that and agreed we should only do it on special occassions and save our money.

Oh, and for dessert we are having homemade lemon meringue pie with a beautiful 4" high meringue topping and I also made a pumpkin pie as well.

I hope everyone else is having a great holiday.

Sounds yummy, mama! We're staying in for New Year's too....we just made homemade chinese food (General Tso's chicken; fried rice; tons of steamed veggies and crab rangoons) and we bought some Lo Mein and egg rolls (I didn't have enough time and patience to make those today!)! It was very good!

We usually have a "fancy" meal like lobster tails and shrimp on New Year's, but decided to have chinese food tonight and save the seafood for next Sunday (my 30th birthday!).

Homemade General Tso is a favorite here, too. We make DH and Rowan real chicken, and then the rest of us eat vegetarian chicken nuggets with the delicious sauce. I always cheat and buy the egg rolls or spring rolls.

I love "fancy" dinners at home. I do a big Indian to-do a few times a year and the General Tso night a few times a year. Since I buy $5-$10 worth of special extras, it's definitely not an everyday thing. We have everyday Asian and Indian menus for regular days. ;) The less we feel deprived of occasional fun stuff, the more we stick to staying out of restaurants.

If either of you would like to share your recipe for this I would really appreciate it. The only asian food I make is a simple americanized stir fry and chicken lettuce wraps. We love asian foods so I would really like to branch out.

I'd love some Asian food recipes, that is one of our weaknesses, the chinese takeout place down the street!

I too love crab legs and haven't had them in ages. Last night we had chili at a friend's house. It was delish, but not quite crab legs, LOL.
