My plan is to end up with both of them sooner or later. Which one would you get first, though? Dh told me I could go ahead and buy a second lens. For the most part, I take snapshots and portraits of my kids.

If you don't have a need for a wider angle than 50mm, I would go with the 50mm first. It's the ideal portrait length on the 30D and does an awesome job at throwing the background out of focus at wide aps--will give a new dimension to your photos. :D

i'd get the 50 mm..i just ordered mine for my nikon.

i'd get a zoom lens before the wider for shooting kids...that's what i often use.
