I just saw this in a catalog I got today, and thought it was SUCH a neat idea. How hard would the sole of these slippers be to make (I think I could handle the felt applique part okay)? Check them out:

Garnet Hill (http://www.garnethill.com/jump.jsp?itemID=12783&itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&keyword=13333)

Just FYI, they have an AWESOME sheet set of wizards and dragons!

Those are darling! Seems like a lot of work for footwear, but they are charming. I think you can buy non-skid latex at the fabric store, so the sole shouldn't be a big issue.

I've made slippers using "boiled wool" fabric aka thrift stores sweaters I shrunk, intentionally, in the washer/dryer. It wouldn't be all that hard really...just time consuming for the details.

Those are WONDERFUL. Now I may need to make myself a pair with a whole different theme :) I don't know about latex, but how about doing a suede bottom like this (http://www.patternworks.com/PWShopping/partsview.asp?action=lookup&partno=300060) one? Or even doing a boiled wool slipper with a sole of jiffy grip. Or my personal favorite; making the slippers with a double layer of wool for the soles and painting rug backing on the bottoms to avoid slipping.

Just a question -- to make the "boiled wool" from thrift store sweaters, do you felt them in the machine? How long do you let them felt? Until they are very felted? Do I need to put them in a pillowcase to save my machine from the fiber mess?

TIA!

wash them in the washer with hot water, detergent, and something heavy and non-linty like jeans (for friction). Run them through the dryer. If you can still see the knitted stiches repeat. Just run them through a regular wash/dry cycle.

You won't need to put them in a pillowcase. They won't make a fibrous mess. If you do a lot of sweaters at once you may need to clean the dryer's lint trap mid-cycle.

Very cool..very elaborate for slippers for kids, though!

I love the dragon bedding...i'm searching for some for the dragon room I'm doing for the kidlets.

My thrift store sweaters are felting right now! It was SO hard to find wool sweaters here that weren't patterned (like nordic)! Amazing. Anyway, I got a lavender, red, and sage green! Can't wait to see how the felt turns out! I have some visions already about how to use the princess idea with other colors (farm, spaceship, Rapunzel, etc).....
