Here are before and after pictures of my family room. The first is what it looked liek when we bought the house last Halloween. When we moved in, we stripped the wallpaper, had the wondows on the left removed (they looked into a covered breezeway and our garage. yuck), and put up beadboard panel "wainscot."

Originally, we planned on keeping the carpet. But then my cats informed me that other animals had lived in there, and they were insistent on claiming that carpet as their own. (That's a nice way to say, my cat kept peeing in the corner). So the carpet went bye bye, and we refinished the floor. It's finished with shellac, which is traditional, beautiful, and 100% renewable. I'll keep y'all posted on its durability.
