I just learned the double cast on and am pretty good at it but I am having trouble with 2 things, how do I "keep it loose" so that it is not to tight on the needle and 2 what do I do with the tail when it is too short to work with? Do I try to weave it into the purl row above it? (Can you tell I am a newb)?

don't know about the short tail (I don't really understand what you're talking about cuz I'm a newbie too lol) but to keep your cast on loose, you can either use both needles held together to cast on, then slide the second needle out, or you can use one needle, but go up a couple sizes. Personally, I don't really like using 2 needles b/c I feel like it's too loose, but using one larger needle is also hard b/c then you have to transfer your stitches to the right sized needle, and I always drop stitches doing that. I suppose you could just start knitting directly from the larger needle (and I'm not sure why I haven't done that...LOL), but I usually just take my cast on row pretty slow so I can focus on not making the stitches too tight.
