I think you could crochet the flake and then use starch on it. I have some lacy snowflakes from my great gram and I think they were stiffened with white glue.

And, they aren't cheesey at all!

I don't do that sort of thing because I'm not talented enough....BUT my grandma used to. I think she used some cotton crochet thread. They have it on larger spools near the cotton yarn section in joannes.

And she used liquid starch (which I don't know where to find). There's "stiffy stuff" which would give a similar affect. I think that's in the glue section of jo's.

here's some ornament patterns.

I was just looking at my book of snowflake patterns yesterday...thinking about making some soon. You can stiffen them with starch, watered down white glue, or that stiffener stuff.

You could use any of the crochet threads. I did an experiment the other day...followed a doily pattern but used worsted cotton yarn and a G hook. It worked and I really like the look of it. Might work for snowflakes too.

Lots of patterns here:

I sure hope they're not cheesy since i've ben working on some lol. I use size 10 crochet thread and steel hooks. My gauge is rather loose so I think I'm using a 1.3 mm. My mother does a lot of doily making so she and I have been working on making a quilt that has snowflakes appliqued on velvet and she has a tree decorated in just crocheted snowflakes. We currently use liquid starch, but you can also use white glue and water, sugar water, or they sell something called stiffy stuff that she used to get to make fabric bows on baskets and she's used that.
