I'm a *bad* knitter. I just grab what ever is cheap or that DD likes from the craft store.

I'm making myself a monmouth cap for my reenactor garb & want good yarn this time. I don't even know where to start.

I'm looking for

100% sheep wool (England in 1706 didn't have alpaca!)
bulky or super bulky
handspun would be an amazing bonus
deep red or dark brown or redish brown
soft soft soft!

Can you yarn horders help me find what I want?

thanks

Have you looked at etsy.com? I'm willing to bet you could find someone there with a handspun bulky. You can also solicit over there with their alchemy thing.

nope haven't tried Etsy, going to check there now.

I found these people anyone bought from them. Looks scrummy.

This darned pattern is based on the original. 2.5 st/inch. That's just crazy. I mean I love that it will get done fast but geeze finding super fat yarn is hard.

Chole,
I don't really know anything about reenactments, but are you allowed to double strand it? You might be able to find something "chunky" and double strand it to get the 2.5 stitches per inch. Or heck, even triple strand something thinner.

Or, try this: http://www.yarndex.com/yarn.cfm?yarn_id=597 if you click on the gauge size, it will search for other yarns with the same gauge. Many yarn shops carry Brown Sheep and should be able to get the burley for you (or you could find it online), or whatever else you might choose.
