Were the pink mermaids in Joann's the same as the blue-and-pink mermaids on green that I pictured above? If not, they're fair game. :) (I got my fabric at The Fabric Place, so I'm hoping that the Joann fabric was different)

This is correct. There are many styles of mermaids, fairies, dragons, etc. I was just trying to avoid *exact* duplicates within the quilt. Does that clarify things?

Okay, so I have my squares cut (finally! :o) but the yard of duplicates (the mother fairies) that I have wouldn't have ended up being fairies on all of the squares if I had cut it. It would just have been floral on most of them.
So, I don't know what I should do. I can try to get to a fabric store by the weekend and buy another yard and send those out - or if someone here has one that they could do in my place - or I don't know. I have the mermaids all cut and ready, but I need one more set and I can't wait for equilter - they're shipping SOOOO slowly.
Want me to just hit the store and see what I can find by the weekend, or should I send what I have now? (In other words, is quantity more important or time?)

My stuff is finally on the way (it was sent this weekend).
I'm so sorry it took me forever. I literally went to FOUR stores to find mythical creatures to take the place of the fairies that would have just been flowers when they were cut. NO ONE had ANYTHING - not even WM!!!!
I ultimately had to get something that personified "magic" to me. It wasn't a creature, but it was the best thing I could find. The other set is mermaids. Anyway - if you get your squares and thing "WTF is this!?" that's my story. I think it will coordinate well with the creatures, but - well, it was a tough one to do locally. In hindsight, I probably could have placed and received a second order from equilter in that amount of time.

:(
two things...
1) could everyone count their squares carefully when they arrive? Maybe somebody has an extra and can send it to somebody who doesn't have enough.
2) count and re-count the squares (though you probably already have)... I find it really hard to count fabric squares, as they sometimes stick to each other, and some are thinner than others, etc. I thought I was short a couple once, and really wasn't.
Being 12 or even just 10 short is substantial, though. and I see you're short on the All Nations swap too. :( I have a little bit of extra fabric with the mermaids-on-green left, and can divvy that up if necessary. I don't think I have any extra of my fabric from the All Nations swap, other than scraps that can be pieced together... I haven't got my squares from these swaps yet, but will let you know if there are extras.

After counting several times I come up three short.

11-16-2006, 01:53 PM
Ack! This is totally why I am not hosting another swap anytime soon. What I did was make the appropriate number of piles on my table (25 in the case of the All Nations and 30 for the Fantasy) and then I "dealt" the squares out onto each pile. After all the squares were dealt from a set, I marked if any were short or over, etc. Then I gathered the sets and placed them back in the bags (according to how many sets were actually sent, not signed up for) and returned them.
Amy, I am just not sure how you could be 12 short (since that's almost half a set!). There's just no way I could have messed up THAT badly!! However, on the that I used to sort the squares, I saw that you actually only had signed up for 2 slots. Could that be where the problem is? I know you sent an "extra" set, so I dealt that out and gave you the 2 sets that were short from your extra set. Does that make sense? Help!

Lori -
I hate to add to your problems with this swap, but I'm missing 6 squares. I sent in two sets of 30, received two sets of 27 back.
The easiest way I found to sort was to make 30 piles, as everyone sent in 30 squares for a set - deal out all the squares, then take the extra piles (one swap only had 25 participant, so the extra 5 sets) and deal those out to the rest of the sets, so each set ended up with 30.
I hope someone comes up with an extra set or something to explain the shortages. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this.

As posted earlier, Hastings only sent in 3 sets (instead of 4) since she found them behind the freezer after she sent the rest out! So that makes everyone's set only 29, and then:
(drumroll please) I forgot to put my squares in! BONK! They are repeats of others in the set (blue with wizards and black with dragons). I will send each of you the additional 2 squares per set. If I have already sent yours, could you please PM me your mailing address so I can drop them in the mail? Thanks! I am SO sorry about this! It must be hormones or something <grin>!
So at this point, you all should have 27 squares per set of the Mythical Creatures swap. When I send my additional 2 per set, you will then have a final number of 29. Make sense?
Okay, here are the people I have already mailed who I still owe 2 squares per set for my fabrics:
Rocketscientist - 1 set x 2 squares = 2
Copmom - 2 sets x 2 squares = 4
Gaga - 1 set x 2 squares = 2
Empathic~heart - 3 sets x 2 squares = 6
purple5262 - 2 sets x 2 squares = 4
The rest will be corrected before I send the packages (once I receive shipping -- see above message). Whew!

Hey, Lori - I went ahead and PP'd you the flat rate priority plus delivery confirmation (I think that was the right amount). :o
I hate for the PO to lose something this cool, so I went ahead and upgraded, if you don't mind? The mailer I sent you can just be thrown away if isn't too much trouble for you to switch. :)
Thanks again!

No problem. Printing the mailing label right now. It will go out in the mail today!

I got my squares today and am 12 short. It said I was 2 short on the outside of the ziploc...but even if I left out two squares, I'm still 10 short overall. I had three slots.
Okay, doing the math here. Since I messed up, I owe you 3 sets x2 squares = 6, Hastings dropped spot = 3 squares, and you being 2 short = 2 for a total difference of 11 squares. So I will get my six off to you tomorrow, and that will be the final number. Does that help?

Lori -
Your math looks right to me, but that still leaves us one short per set - did you package 4 sets for Hastings?
No biggie here - just asking, so everything comes out okay.
Are you in my winter swap? You could just throw your squares for me in with the winter ones.
Glad you figured it out! :)

I'm still confused, too. I realize that these swaps can get tricky. I got my set for the fantasy creatures today, and I know I had sent in a stamp for flat-rate postage. I joined the All Nations swap a bit late I realize, but I had thought that since all the squares were being sent at the same time, then I'd be getting all of them in one return package. So I guess I didn't make that clear enough when I sent in the All Nations squares? OK, so I will send another $4.15, yes? So I can get my All Nations squares? I had sent in 150 squares (5 sets) for the All Nations swap, and 30 squares (1 set) for the Fantasy swap.
Also, I counted my squares too, (for the fantasy swap) and have 27 squares, (one of which is cut only 6" on one side :( ). I figured if everyone sent 30 squares, everyone would get 30 squares back. and if someone sent in 90 squares instead of 120, then that person should get back 90 squares rather than 120. sort of like... whatever you drop into the pot, you can take out again. Of course, this means that everyone gets at least square that is exactly like one of their other squares, but it's still lots easier to make a quilt out of 30 squares than 29! :D It doesn't seem right that Amy should have sent in 90 squares, and only gets 84 back (which would be the case even after you send her another 6). Even if she herself was 2 short in sending you squares (is that why you wrote "two short" on her package???), then she would have sent in 88 squares and should get 88 back. Could we figure out what happened to the missing 1-or-2-squares-per-set, before you send my all nations squares? Were they sent to Hastings in error, as you thought she should have gotten 4 sets back??
I'm just trying to understand things.
Thank you!

:ditto: what Margaret said, about receiving as many as you sent. I signed up for three slots in post #28 of this thread. I am certain I am short 12. Which of my fabrics were missing two squares? I don't have any left over!
The other thing is that I am short on the All Nations swap too, 9 squares total.

Everyone please settle down. I am working my hardest to get this made right!
PLEASE stop posting about what you don't have until you receive your next mailing from me. I have an extra set which I am dividing up amongst all of you, along with the 2 square per set I will be sending. ALL OF YOU WILL END UP WITH 30 MYSTICAL SQUARES (as long as you sent in 30 per set)!!! And those of you who participated in the All Nations Swap will end up with 24 squares.
Okay, Amy, there were only 24 swappers in the All Nations Swap. You are therefore only 6 short for your 3 sets, and I owe you 2 spots (forgot my fabric for this one, too). That makes 3 sets x2 = 6 squares. You should be all set after my mailing to you.
Phew! Let's give me a chance to fix this before we all start getting fired up!

"(one of which is cut only 6" on one side )"
As far as the cutting goes, it was fairly obvious that some of them 1) weren't measured; 2) weren't ironed; or 3) were not cut with a rotary cutter. There's nothing I can really do about that. Feel free to leave feedback in the feedback forum for the participant(s) who was/were careless in the swap.....

I'm 13 squares short. I had 4 sets.
Whomever sent the baby and mommy fairy fabric - I ended up with two from you that have the selvage as part of the square. Please make sure you pay attention to that in the future. :(

I do appreciate how difficult it is to coordinate a swap. and I know you are straightening things out to the best of your ability.

I'm afraid I'm still confused by this. Because if I sent in 5 x 30 squares, I expect to get 5 x 30 back, not 5 x 24. Or do you mean that there are only 24 different types of fabric coming back? and that you'll send back my extra 6 squares per set as well, for a total returned of 30 per set (24 different fabrics plus 6 of the same)? Or did most people only send in 24 squares, so most people will get only 24 squares back? I feel that if we talked in person about this, everything would be cleared up very quickly. The written word can be so imprecise!

:( It's sad. I would hate for people to be turned off by quilt swaps simply because they could not rely on others to take more care. It is hard, however, to be sure who sent what, since they are usually unlabeled and hardly anyone posts pictures of their squares ahead of time. I do commend you for listing descriptions of most of the squares in this particular swap, but not all are listed, and what if there were two fairies on pink, for example, and I don't know who did which? It's not fair for me to leave feedback wrongly.
Will it be the coordinators' responsibility to leave the feedback for each person in the swap, since they're the only ones who are positive about who sent what? Should coordinators send back squares to senders that don't meet certain standards (ie wrong size, ripped rather than cut, with selvages on) rather than passing them on to people who were more careful? I can't recall what Tuesday asked for regarding those questions - will have to re-read. It's a slippery slope. I can well imagine nobody wanting to coordinate swaps any more, due to the hassles involved.
Thank you again, Lori, for your coordinating this. I hope you know that I am supportive of your efforts.

Thanks for all your kind words. You will be returned your extras along with the swap squares, so you will be getting back the same number you sent. Does that makes sense?

Hey everyone, I've been gone all week, sorry I'm missing some of this stuff <sigh>.
Okay, I think that someone who doesn't follow the guidelines for preparing their swap items (ie., not ironing, not cutting off selvedge, not measuring correctly), should have their sets sent back in the future. It's not fair for others to send out great squares only to get back ones that are less than usable :/. As for the feedback...I think it's going to be easiest (on me ROFL) to have the swap coordinators leave feedback for EACH PARTICIPANT, short and sweet though, not long and drawn out. As simple as the name of the swap, whether or not the person shipped on time, and the outcome (good, great, okay, etc)
If they did not ship the correct items that should be noted (X sent in usuable squares, they were sent back) But, I don't want it to be banter back and forth about who did what and so and so was insensitive, so and so hurt my feelings, etc. Just the facts of the matter...The swap was great...or...The squares were wrong...X dropped out within a week of the due date...just pointed feedback.
I'll come back to this because I have to get ready to work. I hope everyone is doing okay, and relatively stress free ROFL

Lori - I'm still wondering which one of my fabrics was short two squares? And how did you end up with an extra set? Is someone missing an entire set, or is everyone short a few in addition to your fabrics?
I'm really not "fired up", I'm simply trying to get clear on what happened and how it will get fixed. In the end I should have at least 88 squares (where the other two went is a mystery) and right now I have only 78 for this swap. For the other swap, I should have 90 and only have 81.
Also, I understand you are telling me what I *should* have, but I am telling you what I *do* have.
It can be very confusing to host a swap like this, because you are sorting 900-some squares! You had two going at once, so that's even more of a challenge! I'm sure it will work out in the end...we just need to keep trying to clarify the details...

Oh - nother thing...on the OP it shows that Sandi was short two squares on her sets but it doesn't indicate that on mine. Wondering if that got mixed up and I got shorted by mistake?
AND - Hastings said she forgot "most of one set", so did she send some of her 4th set or none? That could account for the odd numbers if she sent some but not all.
Finally - Assuming Hastings' 4th set was dropped, and I sent one that wasn't counted on the OP tally, shouldn't we all still have 30 in each set?
Not trying to confuse things more, just trying to clear up my own muddled mind! ;)

I sent a few of the last set. I had all the sets stacked on my chest freezer and part of the pile fell behind it.
Do I owe shipping? Or would it just be better for all concerned if you divided my sets up and sent them to fill in? I really don't care. This was my last swap so wheatever it takes to get people ok with things.

Hastings,
Thanks for the offer, but everyone will be all set with 30 squares once they PM me their address so I can send them the additional squares they are owed. That said, you owe me $8.25 for Flat Rate Priority, and I will get them in the mail to you!
Take care!

I missed this, since I was only in the all nations swap. Can I just say that cutting was soooooo stressful for me!! I ironed, I used a rotary cutter and mat, I measured. But fabric kept slipping, etc. It's a learning curve, I'm sure, but I'm very nervous that I messed it all up still.
Anyway, I didn't even count the squares that I received, but Lori has already asked me for my addy again.
