I have a Canon Rebel 2000, but I'd say that the best investment is a good telephoto lens.

I'm this close to buying the Cannon Rebel XT, but I just don't have an extra $700 lying around.

My dad had a beautiful camera and lenses about 10-12years ago that he had had for 20+yrs and it finally went caput! He was so upset that he didn't have the heart to buy a new one and has setteled for less since then because of the price. But Shhhh - we plan on buying him a VERY nice camers, lenses, bag, tripod, etc... in a year or so. I know that he will be thrilled!!! (It is our long awaited huge Thank You! to my parents for all of tehre support and financial help that they have given us over the years - though there is no way we could ever repay them completely).
