at this point... I would say my book The Well Trained Mind.
If all of my books got lost in the move (GOD FORBID!) - I feel like I could still homeschool WELL just by using Well trained mind and the library. if needed.
Granted... I much rather have books at hand (ie Sonlight and Story of the World) and use WTM approach with those on hand. But if I had to have only ONE thing... it would be that book.

Oh yeah - duh TWTM! How could I EVER live without that!!!
The well=tyrained mind is a book about giving your children a classical education. To those that use it it is a handbook/bible.

After looking at the book and descriptions as well as the critiques, i am very intrigued! I will purchase the book, though i homeschooled my oldest daughter more unschool(y) if thats a word, lol! I am planning on taking a different approach with my 4 year old. she's seems more academically inclined (spends her time sifting through books and asking a zillion questions, can't wait to go to the library to pick out more books, loves nature shows and gardening, interested in reading/writing,though the "waldorf" part of me has been holding off on doing that just yet with her:monkeydan ). I am overwelmed right now with the amount of homeschool curricula etc that is out there!I still don't want to be strict with a scedule of "busy" work,I def. want to do more "school" work type stuff.
Anyway, have any of you read "the well educated mind"? by the same author(s)?
I would like to get a list/resource of great reading (age appropriate)...also...??
thanks!

FWIW - remember when you read the book that her time suggestions and everything are just that - suggestions. I don't know ANYONE who could realistically spend the time on each subject that is recommended in the book. However, the progression, the resources... those are invaluable. I have never regretted a purchase that was recommended in that book. With that book as my guide, I do feel like I have a plan - even though we are a LOT more relaxed. The way I figure it, I introduce the kids to certain things (and I use this book to guide me into what to guide them into) and we delve deeper when they are interested in a particular topic. But it defintiely gives us a good starting point.

I LOVE my planner, with 4 kids its the only thing that keeps me sane and on target. I also really like my children thru history books.

My Homeschooler's Plan Book Plus. It keeps me just organized enough without being over organized. With my fibro fog and memory problems I would honestly drive all of us nuts if I didn't have that book.
I write in it an overview for each day of the week so that even if I get off track I can look at it and know the things we're suppose to do that day. :)
There isn't anything else that I couldn't do without. We are very eclectic with our homeschooling so there's nothing else that isn't replacable.

with all this talk about plan books (and my first thought about being lost without it) I looked and looked for another option and think I might go with print out pages from danna young.
Do you all have links to the plan books you use?

I bought the Edu-Track organizing software last year. I definately would not be a happy camper without it. If I were just hs'g Hannah (5), it would be okay, but since I have a 15 yo dd, I neeeeeeeeeeeed to be super-organized with all her stuff. I love Edu-Track!

Did you see that donna young has a downloadable excell sheet all set up now and it is FREE! It seems pretty gopod to me though it is just for school attendance and coursework, no housework planning area.

I would say the internet. I use it for everything. If the net was not available 2nd runner up would be the library.
I also utilize my planner a whole bunch. After years of expermentation, I finally came up with my own that I love.

I forgot all about those. I wouldn't be able to homeschool (costwise) if it wasn't for the internet and the library. I'd even give up my planbook for them.
Maybe I'm a big weirdo, but I'll say my car! We love going to park days and on field trips. The kids have a great time in their fun classes. We can get to the library and the museum when we want to.
I think I'd lose it if I had to homeschool in this area with no car. It's not public transportation or walking friendly at all. And, while we have some great homeschooling folks in the neighborhood, we love to see ALL of our friends.

I agree w/the internet/computer and my planner! I use the internet for constant research. And heaven forbid should anything happen to my planner. Two more things I couldn't live w/o include a cooperative kiddo who loves being homeschooled and a super supportive husband who thinks it's more important for our girl to have a good education than for me to be in the workforce this year! I have to admit, too, that having good curricula resources is an added bonus! It took us a while to find what works - but man, now that we have - we look forward to our lessons!
