I was thinking of getting these to practice oral reading, phonics, comprehension, etc... We would be getting grade 2. I have had a first hand look at the books and I do like them. What I am curious about is the workbook and the teacher's guide.
What can you tell me about them?

We use them, but we just use the readers. I really like them because my kids read way above grade level, but the stories are very innocent and appropriate for them. :)

Ds reads way above too. Which reminds me - do you know of a reading placement site that I could test him?

Nope, sorry. I know sonlight has a reading assessment, but it's not free.
We never did one because our kids read high school level at 5-6.

wow that is quite impresseive! And do they comprehend it all too, or just able to read it?

I haven't used them, but if Wendy uses them I'm going to check them out ;)
We did the Sonlight assessment (Let's Go Learn, it's $20) when Erik had just turned 4. It is a fun assessment. It gave me a good idea of where he was, and where his (relative) weaknesses were (he was still way above age level). It's game-based. If you (or anyone) does it, the first section is TIMED, the rest aren't. But it's tricky to have the first section timed if your child isn't prepared for it.

Yes. My oldest two children are profoundly gifted.

You're so sweet Heather. They really are adorable stories, though there was some non-ap stuff in them-- insinuations at spankings, etc-- but we used those as good times to explain how other kids are punished sometimes.

I think the stories are kind of dorky, but my kids love them, so go figure LOL. Blake was doing Phonics Museum this year and toward the end of the year he was getting tired of reading, so I gave him a 1st grade pathway reader and he devoured it!!

I like them a lot. Jonah's going through the second grade reader now and he loves it. We live in Amish country and they're kind of appropriate for us. :)
