We are new to homeschool, this will be our first year. My dd is 9.
I know everyone has their schedule that works for them, so what does your day to day schedule look like? Do you do work throughout the day or do you have specific times (like morning) that they sit and do schoolwork??

I just finished this years homeschool schedule this is what it looks like fr my 4 this year, grades k,3rd, 6th and 7th

Monday - Thursday

8:30-9:30 math
9:30-10:30 Social studies/history/ character development(depending on grade and child)
10:30-12 Literature(7th), Spelling/Language arts(3rd and 6th), and writing, sounds (for the kinder)
12-1 lunch tv break
1-2 science
2-3 other(this is the class they get to choose what to learn)

for our other classes this year the kids chose these classes:
on mondays and wednesday they choose a language-younger 3 spanish, 7th grader wants german

On tuesday and thursdays is chorus and performing arts(plays etc)(my kids love to sing and do skits, they also sing for our church so this is a great time to practice before sunday)

Fridays is craft day or cooking day, since this is our last class on fridays this is also the day we will go on field trips instead of doing this class.

Pretty much Fridays are my take it easy day, the weekend is very close and so i like to just wrap up their lessons for the week on this day

With spelling they are given their words on Monday with a fairly large packet of things to do to help them learn their words, i.e. write the defiention, use each word in a sentence kind of pages. On Wednesday we have the pretest to see what still needs work. On thursdays we work on the need help words and Friday they take a test.

Thats my schedule this year, I think it will work pretty good for us.

P.S. i see you are from Olympia, Wa, i grew up in Rainier, Oregon, not to far from you, lived part of my married life in, Kelso, Longview and before we moved here Chehalis, Wa. I use to go to Olympia all the time, never stopped too often but my kids loved to go for car rides so we would drive on I-5 back and forth almost to Seattle and turn around. LOL the things we do for our kids, if id only known how precious gas was back then. I sure aint going cruisin nowadays.

we start at about 8:30 and work until about 11:am then eat then work a little more until 1. we have various topics but generally follow my daughters interest. she likes worksheets and workbooks. and puzzles. we are working on reading and math mostly as well. she also loves animals and birds in particular so that is our focus.

None of our days are the same but here was yesterdays:

6am- Woke up and saw DH off to work. Fed dogs and birds and make coffee, perused internet, and played "Where in the USA is Carmen SanDiego" with my 8 1/2 yo dd

8:30am- Other children start waking and breakfasting then we go to the park across the street

9:14am- We watch Discovery land and call DH to tell him it made it safely (we watched the launch from our front yard since we live in Central FL)

9:45am- 9 1/2 yo plays in the sandbox with his 3yo brother then plays Lego Chess on the computer, 6 1/2 & 8 1/2 yo dds play Barbies and style their American Girl doll's hair

10am- Sesame Street is on and we bring out our puppets and re-create Cookie monster eating the letter of the day

11am- We forage for everyone's dirty laundry and start the washer then we clean up the computer room/spare bedroom

Noon- The older 2 children make lunch for us all

1pm- Oral Motor therapy (30 mins) for my youngest, the older children play with the other children in the waiting room

2:30pm- We're all reading something (not scheduled it just happens like when one person yawns another starts yawning). I finish reading "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing". My oldest dd is reading "The Tale of Despereux", my youngest is reading an "I Spy" book, my oldest ds is reading a book on natural disasters, and my 3yo is reading a Seymour Simon book on trucks. I am reading "Tender is the Night" by Fitzgerald.

3:30pm we watch "Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone". The children watch off and on and then leave to play in their rooms.

4pm- Mailman comes but the algebra book my son ordered is not here today.

5pm- I make dinner. Oldest dd wants to make a lemon merengue (sp?) pie and I end up washing the dishes! (She only uses 7 eggs - she needed 3 egg whites but it took a few tries to not get any yolk mixed in with the whites while separating the egg yolks from the whites!)

7:30pm- DH comes home. We walk the dogs (2.3 miles every night) and then watch Tim Conway and Don Knotts in the movie "Private Eyes" from Netflix. It's hilarious and the children only get a little of the gags in it. (Oldest ds times how long it takes for the first kernel to pop in the skillet whie DH is making popcorn on the stove.)

9:30-10pm- Chidren in various stages of getting ready for sleep.

Now you'd think the children aren't doing any schoolwork but if you are in here you wouldn't hear the comments about how can we share 19 hairbands or what is 50 divided by 4 and the neat way the children figure it out in their heads. The children argue over the meaning of "venomous" versus "poisonous". My 9 1/2 yo son finds it's tricky to use the stopwatch feature on his watch. My oldest dd did a find-the-word puzzle in her "July 06 Literary Guide" from literarychild.com. It goes with her library book "The Tales of Despereaux" book.

Sincerely,
Debra, homeschooling mom of 4 ages 9 1/2, 8 1/2, 6 1/2, and 3
