We have some still, but I'm wondering why exactly. I could get rid of the VCR, and a big shelf, custom made by my ex specifically to hold VHS (back in the day, of course), not to mention all those movies. That would be some decluttering, and DVD's take up much less space.

Did you replace your VHS tapes w/DVDs? Or just get rid of? I can't imagine you can get more than $1-2 each for a VHS movie these days? Most of ours are Disney we bought in the early days of kids, and a huge set of scripture/religious movies that my MIL paid $30 each for. <gulp>

Our vcr broke a while back and we decided not to replace it. Well, everytime we wanted something for school from the library it was on vhs:( I ended up buying another one mainly for that reason. We have a handful of vhs tapes still here, but won't buy anymore.

We Freecycled the three VHS players and sold/gave away all the VHS movies. Even the Disney ones we'd spent in excess of $20 each for. We're much happier having the space and the kids were so spoiled with DVDs they didn't like to watch VHS anyway. We are slowly replacing some of the Disney classics through Disney Movie Club when they have specials, etc. We don't miss the grown-up movies we got rid of...and we don't buy movies at the rate we used to.

We just gave away the VHS. We still have our VCR in storage for if/when we get around to editing our camcorder tapes onto VHS...but I think now that's unlikely and we'll go straight from Hi-8 to DVD.

We keep our DVDs and CDs in binders. Takes up very little space.

we have a small TV upstairs that has a DVD/VHS in it so that if we get VHS from the library (happens for school a lot) we can watch it, otherwise I donated *all* of OUR VHS kid movies to a family displaced by Katrina last summer. our other VHS movies went to the goodwill when we bought this house a year and a half ago so no more VHS in-house here.

i do like having the option of watching VHS bc of the library, though. they've not caught up with the rest of the world quite yet ;) (i know, i know, they're on a budget and can't replace a perfectly good tape with DVD just because...which is why we keep a VHS player around so we can benefit from those videos.)

if you don't homeschool and need it for the library reason, i can't see the benefit nowadays.

Actually, a couple of weeks ago we sold our VCR player... and today we are donating the rest of the VHS tapes (minus a couple that had plays the kids were in, we plan to get those recorded to DVD).

Like Lauren said, our DVD's are all in binders (well... on their way to being all in binders).

Is it expensive to have your 8 mm tapes made into dvd's? I have lots and need to do that. Also, our camcorder isn't working and dh wants to have it fixed whereas I want a new one so we don't have to deal with having to have it all transfered. Maybe I can sell him on a new one when he hears the price of all the transfers (LOL) We just use VHS movies so much for school that I can't see getting rid of it. The libraries just don't have as much on dvd in that categorie yet (LOL)

If you decide to get rid of the scripture/religious movies let me know what you will be asking for them as my kids think those kind of movies are neat. I'm no help as we still have way to many vhs tapes,

Answering in case she doesn't see your question. They have them in the DVD/CD section. Most of them zip around. The ones for DVD's have slots big enough for you to put the paper from the cover of your DVD in it. The CD ones are just big enough to hold the CD/paper cover alone. :)

Yep... when we got our new tv (in Nov?) we needed to get a new VCR, and we decided to get rid of the VHS instead. Now we have all DVD's and we are slowly getting our collection back up. We traded all the old VHS films for credit at our local CD store and got a few DVD's from there. We also put the ones we couldn't find on their search list so we could get them again. I am still waiting for Bagar Vance, The Story of Roan Inish, and Secret Garden, which were well loved films in our house to watch as a family and we haven't found on DVD.

We still have a handful of disney movies on VHS, mostly because the kids won't let them go until I can replace them on DVD. I have soooo many videotapes I would love to transfer to DVD; many hours of X-Files "dailies", the raw footage from episode shoots, and many random obscure episodes of old tv shows with some of the X-Files actors in them. But it's costly, and I don't have the space to attempt to hook up the equipment and learn to do it myself.

I personally don't buy DVDs for myself anymore, becuase when I get in a bind financially I just turn around and sell them. I try not to be materialistic, but it really crushed me to sell all 9 seasons of the X-Files and all my Buffy the Vampire Slayer boxed sets a couple of years ago, coming up with the deposit to move into this house.

I was so tired of the amount of space the VHS tapes were taking up. It made me sad, though, to know how much money I had spent on them all, but I bagged them up and donated about 95 percent of them to the Goodwill. I kept a few of the faves and am slowly but surely buying our favorites in VHS form now.
