I just joined this list today. My name is Audrey.

I am Mommy to a 3 1/2 yr old very gifted girl ( reading on her own at age 2...science encylopedia junkie!! wordy, brainy...memory queen little delightful challenge! :) )
, a 2 yr. old boy just starting to sound out words on his own....starting writing letters recently on his own! and bright as a button,

and a wee 5 mo. boy...sweet, bright faced and happy!

We've been learning at home for a couple years now ( the very nature of our eldest makes learning at home a must ). We planned on homeschooling before we had children. Now that we've been blessed with little gifted minds, we are even more convinced that our choice is the best one for our family.
I was also taught at home growing up. :)

So , anyhow, I just wanted to say hello! I'm joining!
I've been on the TAGMAX list ( for parents of homeschooled gifted kids ) for awhile now and LOVE it!
Is anyone here familiar??? It has been a tremendous resource for us! Such an encouragement! :)

I'll try to find time to catch up on the previous threads here....

Hello Audrey! Nice to meet you. I didn't even realize this forum was here, and I've been an Amity mama for six years! LOL

I'm glad to have found it though since my two eldest girls are gifted, and I suspect my third is, as well. They all attend public school. I wish they received more than two hours per week of gifted education, but considering many schools have no services for gifted and talented students I suppose I should be grateful.

I will seach for past posts in this forum to see what I've missed.

Welcome! I'm on TAGMAX, but I can't keep up with it at all. I read the emails sporadically, and very rarely I reply.

I have a 4 1/2 year old similar to your elder child (also reading at 2, he loves math and astronomy), and a 2 yr old who loves letters, numbers, and books, but isn't reading yet. He's not writing yet either. Still a smart one, though!

Please ask any questions you have. This is a relatively new subforum for us here, but everyone has been very supportive.

You mentioned your eldest loves math. My Starshine girl just asked me the other day if she could learn more math. Do you know of any good "Math reader" books or another resource that might be a nice starting place for her?
She knows basic addition and subtraction somewhat already.
I'd like to recap that a bit and perhaps take her somewhere new and interesting with math....?
We love tessalating ( am I even spelling that right? ) shapes and patterns etc too!
Let me know if you've any fun ideas!...or any boring ones even ~!

Family Math is fun, too--good ideas for games/activities to do together. This is for the Family Math for Young Children (Pre-K through 2nd) http://www.lawrencehallofscience.org/equals/EQbkychild.html And from that page, you can see the other books they have.

We do singapore math. It is a workbook, but a fun one. We do math only when he feels like it, as much as he wants.

Welcome, Audrey. Your oldest sounds like my Sam. Reading well at 2 and blasting off from there. Sam's deep interest is history, but he also loves literature, math, and science. We're unschoolers, basically following his lead. He's 6.

Our math is mostly chalkboard-based and word problems that I make up in the car. History is where I have to spend the most time poring over resources and learning things for the first time. I never really learned much about the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Ottoman Empire, etc., but I am learning it now!

I have 4 children - 3 of whom are gifted. Their strength is definitely math.

We've been homeschooling school aged kids for 5 years now, and I still haven't found a math program I want to use as our main curriculum. We're using a conglomerate of activity and discover books. The Family Math series is wonderful. We also are using Calculus By and For Young Children. And there are a few 'grade level' activity books called "A Collection of Math Lessons". Along with those I have found that manipulatives along with the activity books designed to be used with them are very fun and useful. You can find a lot of instruction books in the education area in any larger book store.

One of my friends here with gifted kids has recently been telling me how great RightStart Math is. I haven't used it, but it's intriguing to me, since she likes it so much. I just keep going through "why mess with something that's working?" ;)
