I had no intention of making a doll when I started this, I just had this gorgeous wool and metallic yarn that reminded me of a mermaid and decided to try my hand at crocheting a mermaid tail. It was supposed to be a dress-up outfit for Lorelei's waldorf doll but once I got it crocheted I decided I liked it so much that it needed to be more.
I had a great time making this-- now just have to wait until payday and order some more supplies so I can make another one. :)
This is my first attempt at making a wig and I crocheted a cap like I would make a hat and then hand knotted each strand of hair. Is there an easier/faster way? That took FOREVER.
The first picture is how she ended up being (I tweaked her face a little after seeing the first pictures) but the second pic gives a better view of the tail and the colors.
thanks for looking

she's wonderful!
when you say you hand-knotted each strand do you mean you tied a knot? I crochet a cap and attach each strand like you would latch hook...or attach fringe. I fold the strand in half...pull the looped end through the cap...and feed the cut ends through the loop, then tighten. It does take a while but once you get a rhythm going it's not too bad.

Yeah, that's what I meant about knotting it. So that's how you're supposed to do it huh?

She made my little mermaid laugh and she tried to grab her out of the monitor :)
I love her!

She kept trying to steal it while I was making it and run off. :) She's actually not L's though, I decided to send her off to another little girl and I'm working on another one for L in a different color scheme-- just have to wait until the wool I have on order gets here.

what color scheme are you doing for Lorelei's?
I have to say, I'm in total awe of your ability to look at something like yarn and know what it wants to be made into.. I look at it and thing, wow, that's pretty.. but no inspiration ever strikes. I have to come up with the inspiration and then figure out what I need to make it reality - but can't do it the other way around.

L's is a yarn that varigates from rose to sage green and I'm doing the hair brown rather than from the same yarn.
Sonja, I may make a few more, but I only have about 5 more skiens of the yarn (I got it on clearance at my lys) and have to see if I can get some more somewhere.
