I need to get some type of phonics program for my 5 year old. He is so close to reading and can read a little - bob books and random words here and there - but I think he needs some type of phonics study to help him put the pieces together. I've been looking at different ones and am unsure what to choose.

I tried 100EZ with him and we just did not click with it.

Based on posts I've seen here I know phonics pathways or ordinary guide to teaching reading are options - but I'm not real hot on getting another book that doesn't have any worksheets or flashcards or stuff with it that will help engage him.

I have been looking at phonics museum and it looks fun.

Then this week I started looking at winterpromise and thinking the preK would be awesome for my 4yo.....then it occurred to me that maybe I should get the advanced K for my 5yo and I could do them together. But there really isn't a lot of info about the phonics included kwim?

Any suggestions? I realize I'm floundering. LOL!

Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading does have flashcards and a magnetic board with letters to engage them. We were using it without those tools, and after we moved I couldn't find my book so I ordered the complete kit... they are loving the maniplatives with it. :)

If you scroll down, it's a kit - with teh book spiral bound (what a GREAT idea!!!) for $55.

I guess everyone knows my bias (as of right now, anyway! lol)

We use OPG. I already had magnetic letters (the plastic kind for the fridge) and I am making my own flash cards. It isn't alot of work and it works well for us, plus it saved me lots of money over buying the kit. (Plus I borrowed my book from a good friend. LOL)
