Oh the joy! When my daughter first asked me to play the Beatles! After months of listening to Sesame Street and wheels on the bus, it was so great to rock out to Revolver with my kids. She likes Amos Lee and Dixie Chicks too but it got me thinking, what's the best Kid friendly grown up music? and even the best grown up friendly kid music ( I have to admit I somtimes get a little tearyeyed when Kermit sings "ThisFrog")?

We listen to alot of phish and grateful dead. Ds loves it. we also do alot of bluegrass and jazz. David Grisman and Jerry Garcia have a great CD called Not For Kids Only . It's real good. Folk/bluegrass type songs, fun for kids.

We love Rusted Root, per Meeshi's suggestion. Buckwheat Zydeco has a kids album that is great -- Choo Choo Boogaloo. Enya or basically any Celtic ethereal sound. Andean flutes and drums.

I do not listen to other adult music with them. The topics are things I am not ready to discuss, or at least not in passing in the car which is the only place we listen to music.

We listen to alot of Grateful Dead, The Band with daddy and then Jerry Lee Lewis, Van Morrison, and Dean Martin with me. The only exception is with my nephew and his Lazy Town cd.

We listen to Pete Seeger, and we love him! He has made singing a part of our lives, as the natural inclination seems to be to sing along, and then keep right on singing. He inspires us to make our own music instead of leaving it to the "professionals".

I also listen to Lyle Lovett, the Breeders (Last Splash, not Pod), The Beatles, Woody Guthrie, Cab Calloway, and so on. We really do not listen to much kid music with the exception of Little White Duck :p

Our girls love Paul Simon, Bob Marley, Rusted Root, all of the Putumayo discs, Dave Matthews, The Dead, David Grisman, all sorts of music from different countries... We have Sirius radio now and they listen to Jam-on, Coffee House, Spectrum, they love the Latin stations and even listen to techno, New Age, stuff like that.

There's very little I don't listen to around dd. Our favorite, though, is indie pop and dancey rock: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Talking Heads, Cat Power, PJ Harvey, White Stripes, The Sounds... we love to rock out together.
Kid Music I love: They Might Be Giants' album, NO!

ETA, speaking of Kermit, we both love The Muppet Movie soundtrack. :D

oh I'm glad you said that first. My DD hates folky type music! She loves the ramones, screaching weasel & the Bostones plus a couple of songs from my friends old band Oblivion. She also likes all 50's rock n roll. I get the feeling that she's going to be a rockabilly girl when she gets older.

We also listen to a lot of Bhangra & the rough quide series, esp anything with heavy drumming.

I'm brand new here (intro post to come!), but I have to say that we don't really have specific music just for the boys. We listen to everything with them. That said, though, we have iTunes and an iPod, and I made a "Kids' Playlist" for them, with their favorites. So far, the big hits are:

"One More Minute" by Authority Zero
"Birdhouse in Your Soul" by They Might Be Giants
"Day-O (Banana Boat Song)" by Harry Belafonte
"Balloon Man" by Robyn Hitchcock
"Big Rock Candy Mountain" by Harry McClintock (from the "O Brother . . " soundtrack)
"Elvis Is Everywhere" by Mojo Nixon (terrific fun song!)
"Mercedes Benz" by Janis Joplin
"Flowers On The Wall" by the Statler Brothers
"Happy Boy" by the Beat Farmers
"Misery" by Green Day
"Fishin' Blues" by Taj Mahal
"Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root (aka, the "Ice Age" song!)
"Shambala" by Three Dog Night (they loooooove singing along with this song!)
"Should I Stay Or Should I Go" by The Clash
"Soak Up The Sun" by Sheryl Crow
"Song 2" (aka the "Woohoo Song") by Blur
"Sunrise" by Norah Jones
"Tequila" by The Champs (we say, "Tortilla," instead of "Tequila" though!)
"What's Left of the Flag" by Flogging Molly
"You Are My Sunshine" by Norman Blake
"Zoot Suit Riot" by Cherry Poppin' Daddies

and, just about anything by Pearl Jam! :D

My boys are definitely punkers! My husband plays guitar, and we have a "little guy" guitar for them to play. And, they do! They also put on stage shows while they're playing. It's hilarious! :cuc:

We listen to alot of reggae, but my dd takes after her dad and likes to rock out to heavier stuff too. Her top 3 cd's are: Bob Marley & Wailers Greatest Hits
Removal (local heavy instumental band)
Wassabi Collective (local funky jam band)
We listen to a huge variety of music, some of her fave bands are: Slightly Stoopid, Xavier Rudd, Clutch, Mama's & Papa's, and St. Germaine.
Now that she's older, we plan on taking her to some music festivals this summer. I can hardly wait to rock out with my dd! :)
