I made this as a thank you gift for the daughters of my hostess at Sew Expo. I used a Japanese craft book that I bought from Meg aka Nutmeg. It was a lot of fun to do, and I would've enjoyed it more if I hadn't waited until the very last second to make it. I bought the bento box at my local asian market. It was presented wrapped in kimono themed fabric with matching napkins and a chopstick set, but I forgot to snap a pic of that.
Here's the whole box:

and close-ups:

this side is dumplings, sweet egg, shrimp, tuna and salmon

and this side is cucumber and tuna rolls, wasabi and pickled ginger, soy sauce, and finally sea urchin and cucumber rolls.
Now to make Duncan his set. :help:

I made the set for Ara and Monie and they really loved it. Ara asked me what each piece was and all sorts of questions about how I made it. Those girls are just wonderful.
I actually made it to the Japanese bookstore while in Seattle and picked up 5 books for myself. And one as a gift. They had SO many, I would've gotten more if I knew how to knit. :cuc:

I am headed to Sacramento in a couple of weeks -- can't wait to check out the 2 Japanese bookstores there (and maybe the one in San Jose on another trip).....

Do the books cost about the same in Seattle, etc., as they do on ebay?

Nope, in the store they were $12 for the big ones and $5.60 for the smaller ones, so it looks like there's about a $10 mark-up on eBay plus the spendy shipping from Japan. I knew there was no way I could go to Seattle and not check out that shop. They had all sorts of lovely things. I bought Duncan the "My Neighbor Totoro" storybook which is just gorgeous.

Thanks for the info! I have two friends who live in Seattle, and wouldn't hesitate to send either of them shopping for me ;) Do you remember the info on where the shops were located? or what they were called? I'd love to get a couple of these books as well :)
Thanks,
Tamara
