Dh is being scouted for a job in the Ridley Park area. Right now we are living in NW Florida and love it! But since dh is a military contractor, it seems like it might be time to move again.

I read a thread from 2003 about parents and parenting in the Philly area and I am wondering what has changed and what anyone else has to add. It looks like there is a thriving LLL and API group in the Philly area now.

I would like to live in an outlying suburban area so that we could get an acre or two, but I also want to live in an area where I will be able to find other homebirthing, breastfeeding, APing moms. Dh would be willing to commute up to 30 minutes to/from Ridley Park. There are sooooo many choices of places to live in the Philly/Delaware county area. Are there places that are more family friendly or family concentrated? Any suggestions?

Also, does anyone know of any homebirthing midwives in the Philly/Delaware county area? I know that there are no midwifery laws in PA but I saw a freestanding birth center in Pittsburgh? Anyone have any experiences with homebirthing in PA? In Philly or surrounding areas?

TIA for your responses!

Hi Nicole,

I think I know you from It Takes a Village yahoo group. It's been a while. =) I live in Wilmington, DE which is about 30-45 minutes south of Philly. There is a birth center in Wilmington called The Birth Center. I know several mamas who will be delivering there and they are very happy with it. You might want to call them. I am sure they have info about the surronding areas. As for AP and LLL groups, you might want to try sending a PM to Tara (of Urban Fibers). She has lived in the city for several years and might be able to guide you.
