I don't and you know why...I don't know how to pick the right colors/tones. Like foundation, which my face really could use right now, or maybe it's concealer....how do I know which color will work? I remember in high school picking what I thought would be the right color only to look like Powder or like I used to much self tanner, but it would be too late cause I opened it up and tried a bit.

Any pointers for an idiot? :p

I don't, because I'm too lazy. :)

I always go to a makeup counter and let them help me pick out the right colors...and that way I can try them on before buying.

I don't often, but when I do I try to stick to looking pretty natural. Maybe some powder to get rid of shine, blush, a little eye liner and mascara and some lip gloss.

I wear it every day, no matter what! I don't wear powder or concealer or foundation, though, so I can't help you. I wear blush, lipstick, and mascara - sometimes eye shadow. It takes me about 3 minutes to put it on and I love the look!

I used to wear make up daily (I was a Mary Kay lady, I would have looked pretty silly if I didn't!) I would suggest that you find a MK consultant in your area, she will help you find the right shades for your face and if you don't like them, even if you have used them, they are returnable/exchangable.

I used to wear it everyday...then after ds it turned into whenever I feel like it. If I stay home all day...then no. If I am going out somewhere, usually, but not alot. :)

I do...or at least I try. After my run, I take a shower, put on nice clothes and makeup. I think looking nice, helps to feel nice. Plus, it goes with my idea that I always want to be ready for unexpected guests. I used to be really bad about letting things/myself go but over the last year, I've made some huge changes in that regard and *I* feel better.

I use BE. It's easy...just the basic powder...whatever that is, LOL. The blush stuff...forget what it's called, Warmth? Too lazy to get up :p . Some eyeliner and mascara. THere's an Alta store in town and they sell BE so I have 2 different shades I wear, depending on how much sun I've gotten. They have fliers with 20% coupons too! :cuc:

I do on most days, sometimes it's too much effort. :shake:

As for colors and such...go to a make-up counter at a department store and try several things. Also, places like Rite Aid and Walgreens have refund policies if you don't like a color you buy after you try it (I'm not sure which stores do, so check first).

You could also treat yourself to a make-over with an esthetician and get a facial at the same time! Sounds good for a pregnant mommy of three!

I never wear any ever.
if you have a sephora near you they will give samples of whatever you want usually. that way you could try stuff before you buy it.

I agree completely! I get nicely dressed and do my hair and makeup before I leave to take Emma to preschool. I love that I feel ready for anything. If my sister calls while I'm in the car, I can just meet her at Starbucks. Or, if I decide to run to the mall, I'm all set. And I'm not afraid of someone stopping by.

I know it's different for everyone and I certainly am not implying that those who do not wear makeup are not attractive or anything! It's just something that's important to me!

No, I don't. I wore it for years, first because that is what is culturally appropriate in our country and especially for teens, then because is was pretty much expected in the banking industry.

Well, I hate that women are told that they look nicer, more beautiful, etc. with makeup. I especially hate that girls and teens get this message. What is wrong with looking natural? Why is there one standard of beauty to uphold (big eyes, pouty lips, rosy cheeks, dark, long, thick eyelashes)? You can argue that colors change from season to season, but pale thin eyelashes and thin lips are pretty much never "in".

I last wore makeup a year ago, to my brother's wedding. I look at the pictures, and I don't look like me. I leave for Maui Friday and I'm not taking any makeup with me.

I understand what you are saying, but I think that sometimes there is a double standard. What do you think of tattoos? or piercings? or hair color (whether a natural color or not)? I don't see it as any different. For some reason, many people who make the argument you are making seem to think that those other things are just fine, even beautiful, liberating, etc. Why the difference?

KimberMama - I don't know your take on tattoos and such, so I do not mean to put words in your mouth!

I do every day, well sometimes on the weekend if we're staying in I might not.

I just don't feel comfortable without it other than around the house. Plus I just enjoy wearing it.

Rite Aid and Ulta will both take back opened makeup with a receipt. I'm pretty sure Sephora will too, and that most higher end tables in Macy's and such will too. (I'm not 100% positive about them taking back opened ones though.) If I'm trying something new I always buy it at Rite Aid or Ulta so I can take it back if it doesn't work for me.

I, for one, feel much more cruddy whenever I look in the mirror and see a pale face with dark circles under the eyes... I just wanna cover it up and revive my face...you know to look "alive" :o
thanks for the ideas!

I wear lip balm and that's about it. I have a tube of mascara somewhere that's probably too old to even use anymore, but I used to do that if we were going out dancing at night or something.

I wear makeup maybe four times a year - only at "firm functions" or weddings or funerals, pretty much.

Or the theater :) Took DD to see Joseph this year and I wore make up ;)

I have (and wear)
Shiseido powder base (it's a compact that goes on like powder, but you can get the applicator wet for more coverage)

Some kind of concealer - I don't remember the name - drugstore brand. It looks like a lipstick.

Burt's Bees black eyeliner (just a bit on top - not so much that it's noticeable, just to accentuate the lashes)

XXL mascara - it's the kind with the white base and then the black that goes over it. Again, drugstore kind.

Bobbi Brown lipgloss stuff - it's in an angled tip tube and it's a dark red, but it's very sheer - so it's like lip balm with a hint of color. I think it's called Maple.

Oh - and some blush, if I need it - but I have rosacea so my cheeks are always red and I don't like to draw any more attention to that.

Every day I obsessively use Burt's Bees lip balm. I'm almost out! ACK!
I have one in my car, one in my purse/bag, and one in the top dresser drawer at the moment. I NEED my lip balm. Used to be SoftLips, now it's BB's.

You know, I don't really care if people choose to wear makeup. What I don't like is the standard of beauty in our culture. For the most part, I think of tatoos, piercings, funky hair coloring, etc. as being more counter-culture than conforming to it (little ankle designs and lower back designs excepted, as they are downright trendy here in So Cal). Also, in my experience these are very much things that either young adults do, or people who purposely challenge the status quo.

To me there really is a difference between doing something because you want to, and not because our society expects it of you . The media portrays the ideal woman as one who has conservative hair (colored to cover grays, or nicely highlighted), nicely done makeup, not too much jewelry, no visible tatoos, etc. Just look at anchor women, the standard housewife on TV, women in commercials and print ads, etc.).

We grow up with those images. They represent beauty to us. We can think that we choose to wear makeup, but in most cases we are trying to conform with images of beauty that we have grown up with. What's up with foundation? Why do we need to cover freckles, pale skin, dark circles, wrinkles, or heack, even pimples? Aren't they part of who we are? We are conditioned to think that they are ugly. Heck, to me, dark circles on a mama are a badge of honor. Everyday, in every way, we are told that these things are not attractive.

We like to think things are changing, but in reality, it is harder to get a job if you are fat, don't wear makeup, have multiple piercings, especially facial piercings, have bright pink hair, are Goth, have tatoos, or are even less than 100% heterosexual, etc. In some industries these things are becoming more accepted and even trendy, but for the most part to climb the ladder (if you want to climb it, or need the $$ to feed your family) you need to conform.

Personally, I don't color my hair. It's brown. It doesn't need artificial highlights; either I get them from the sun or I don't have them. I don't have tatoos or unusual piercings. Some days I may have a pimple, or dark circles. I live in a sunny place and my face is white around my eyes from wearing sunglasses, but I don't wear makeup to "even out" my skin tone. My eyelashes seem to get thinner and lighter as I get older.

This isn't that coherent...I'm sorry.

I do, everyday! It makes me feel better about myself when I wear it. I started using Bare Minerals as foundation last year and I love it. It's so much easier! I don't wear a lot, just a little to enhance and conceal.

I think the "counter-culture" stuff (tattoos, etc) is jsut as much about conforming as makeup. It's just about conforming to a different culture.

OR - could it be that some people truly like wearing makeup and wear it because they want to?

We can think that we choose to wear makeup, but in most cases we are trying to conform with images of beauty that we have grown up with.
How is this different than conforming with the images of the counter culture? Just because it's mainstream doesn't make it bad. I think I need to put that statement in my sig line, actually! :)

Anyway - I think that tattoos are really ugly and I hate lip and eyebrow piercings. I like makeup the way that I do it, but I think that many women wear it in a really tacky way. Good thing we each get to choose what to do with our own bodies!

I think tattoo's and piercings started that way, but IMO, it's become such a trend that it's hard for people to be original these days.

Totally agree.

I used to be lazy and dress in sweats and slap on some lipgloss or something like that. But, part of feeling organized in my life is to dress for my days at home as well. I don't look overly made up, but I do look together.

I like MAC. Yup, it can be on the costlier side, however, it lasts just about forever (and I'm not talking mascara or stuff that needs to be replaced frequently). So, in the long run, I probably spend less than I would if I bought drugstore makeup (though I do buy Maybelline mascara and replace it every 3 months).

But, when I feel put together with clothes, hair, and makeup, I feel as if I'm going to my job of being a mom and I end up feeling more put together and I accomplish more.

If it's summer and I'm sportin' a good tan, I'll skip it. But during winter, esp Feb, I look absolutely hideous.

I wish I had pointers but I feel like you! I would like to wear make-up if nothing else to cover the redness of my face that I am so conscious of. Yet I really don't know what I'm doing with the stuff!

Now maybe part of it is that I never wore make-up as a teen. those seem to be the few years in life where a person can do some really bad make-up and noone looks twice because "they're learning". Somehow at 28, after having a corporate job, you'd think I would know what I was doing already. I never went though the bad make-up phase & I'm afraid to go through it now.

It's also posible that I don't wear make-up because I don't know what I look like with it on. I had professional make-up done for a family photo when DD was 7 months old. I don't look anything like the person in that photo. I do foundation now (complete me from philosophy covers the red great) but when I look in the mirror I don't look like "me" (she's the one with the red face & weird hair!). So I err on the side of caution and do nothing.

I too would like to know what I'm doing and at least be *able* to put on make-up like other women but I"m just afraid.

I used to view almost all makeup, jewelry, fashion and even things like shaving as ways society put pressure on women to "package" themselves for the male gaze or be seen as a sexual commodity. I was a hairy hippie type most of my 20's and never wore makeup, didnt shave etc. (but I did bathe and I do not consider it dirty to use minimal toiletries etc.)

When I hit 30 I realized that my view was too limiting as it didnt allow ME to choose how I wanted to be based on my own feelings of what being a woman is. I think makeup, or dressy feminine clothing for example is A-OK if a woman feels good about herself in that makeup or those clothes. It has been really liberating for me to actually say it is ok to buy a shirt with some sparkly bling on the front or a little low cut or whatever. It is ok to celebrate your body and wear fitted clothes if they make you feel good. So what!

My complexion has always been poor no matter what I eat, drink or use on my skin and now that I am pushing mid-30's I just feel a little ragged without wearing some makeup. I feel more "put-together" and optimistic with a little on. Huge puffy bags under the eyes run in my family so the combo of those and my large pores and spotty skin just don't make me feel pretty or professional looking at all when I head to grad school for example. I don't wear it every day but I feel better about myself when I do and to me that is what matters. If someone else thinks I am a sellout, that's their issue, not mine.

And I would say in my opinion that dyed hair and piercings and tattoos are pretty mainstream and trendy in their own way really. It's all relative. I think everyone should do whatever makes them feel good as far as their appearance and who cares what anyone else thinks?

Hi Erica! I totally understand. I look at my pics with my dd when she was a baby and I looked so tired and run down. I swore that wouldn't happen with ds, so I really made an effort to wear make up. I love, LOVE the Sonia Kashuk stuff at Target. IT is wonderful (I used to be a clinique only girl since). I get the tinted moisturizer which also has an SPF in it. It goes on really sheer and blends perfectly, and it has the light reflecting things to hide problems. I also have the concealer compact, and I use that to hide the dark circles under my eyes. I then have a complete make up set from her line, which is about the size of a check book. It has a couple tinted glosses, eye shadows, blush, and pressed powder. I don't use it all but it is right there and then I use a masacara. I can fit all of those items inside of a tiny little bag. I also have the skincare line and have been happy with that as well.

I pretty much everyday. Why? Not because I need it (it doesn't bother me not to wear it as I did for a few years) but because (like said above) I feel better taking care of myself. I *enjoy* putting on makeup. I actually think of it as an art and could do it for hours LOL! It's like painting- don't get the idea I look like a painted clown though! LOL! I feel like I took time for ME and with being an AP mom that's pretty hard to do for me. I also do think I look 'put together' and am showing the world I took the time to care for my appearance. Oh and just to add: DH doesn't care if I do or don't wear makeup.. He thinks I am always purdy :D I do it FOR ME ;)

As far as finding the right type? I like the advice given above. Check out the malls and get a makeover if you can spend the money on the makeup they suggest. Or check out the return policies on makeup before you buy :) I LOVE the book Don't go to the cosmetic counter without me although I think she has stopped writing them now. I have her last and it is still very useful!

I do wear makeup, although not every day. I work in a coffee shop 5 days a week, but only see people 3 days, the other 2 I bake in the early morning.

I love to put on and wear makeup. It makes ME feel good about myself. However, I've gotten to the point that I pretty much only wear eyeliner, a touch of mascara, MK lip balm, and a light natural lipstick. Occasionally I do use foundation. Right now I use Loreal Perfect Match...I like that it goes on light and doesn't "look" like foundation. I do want to try some BE though, when taxes come around.

Oh, and I'm a former Mary Kay lady also. :)

I use concealer to cover up those under eye circles and pressed power to get rid of any shine. I *love* shopping for different lip glosses. Right now I am using terra tints on my lips and I occasionally wear mascara, but my lashes are still pretty thick.

I like to look nice even if I am staying home all day. I just feel better about myself when I look better. I also want to look nice for dh.:hbeat: When I was in my 20's I hardly ever wore any but now I really don't look as good without any ~ those darn dark circles!

I wear it only if I am going to be leaving the house...I think I look dreadful without it...I have BAD under-eye circles and my skin isn't exactly even in coloring...add to that I am paler than pale. I too had a hard time finding the right shades - I started trying out colors on the inside of my wrist - if the color MATCHED and blended nicely, then there was a good bet it would work on my face.

Also, I went once to the Este Lauder counter and had them do my make-up and pick out my colors - they gave me a sheet with my "colors" on it - names and samples, and I took it to Wal-Mart and got the cheap (Jane brand) stuff in the same shades...hehehehehe!

If wearing foundation makes your face feel cakey, try using a concealer -I use a liquid form by Jane - under your eyes and to cover any blemishes or uneven spots. Then dust a light powder over top of that. I also use blush and mascara, but that's really about all after that.

HTH!

:hahaha:

I went to Origins last night and got some help with the colors and then I errr......"conformed". I got a face exfoliant and man, the skin under that dry layer I had feels awesome. I got face moisterizer, mascara, powder and concealer and face wash. I felt like a million bucks just with the fresh skin and moisterizer. :cuc: :cuc:

oooh! Yes! I love Origins. I like their Never A Dull Moment line...facial cleanser and some body wash. I also have some facial scrub, the toner stuff and their grapefruit extract tub of lotion stuff is TDF!

For makeup I use the Bare Minerals makeup for everything but mascara. I just use plain ole Loreal for that. MAC lipstick is THE best! But it's too much for everyday...I like lip liner and a nice shimmery lip blam or gloss.:smooch: Have fun! I like to wear make up in a way that's only noticable if I'm not wearing it, kwim? I don't look like those MAC chicks. :shake: that's some scary stuff.;pop:

I wear it now & then. I was obsessed when I was in high school & have always recieved compliments for my make-up abilities LOL

I learned by reading all the teen magazines. I dont know if fashion magazines geared to women have make-up ideas? I know there is a Bobbi Brown book for girls to teach them how to apply it. Also - the girls at the counter dont always know what is best. I am very fair, but on more than 1 ocassion have had a counter girl tell me I needed foundation that was too dark for me. But, if you can find a good counter finding the right color of foundation if you are going to wear it is imperative! I wear foundation, powder (I always use translucent), sometimes blush. lipstick/gloss. Very rarely eyeshadow since i am allergic. I used to curl my eyelashes & wear mascara, but it ruined my long eyelashes. They have since grown back nice & long & thick & I'm not taking chances anymore! LOL Also, I wouldnt wear eyeliner too much. it gives you wrinkles from pulling on your eye skin. When I was younger i took etiquette classes & along with it they taught us how to use make-up & what "season" we were so that we would know the right colors to pick. So, I know that I am warm & that light peaches & such are going to look good on me. That makes it super easy. :)

reading the other posts, I think it is interesting that so many women feel they need to wear it every day to feel pulled-together, company ready & what have you. When I want to feel pulled-together I put on a nice clean skirt & blouse, wash my face, moisturize, put on some lip balm, brush my hair & put on deoderant. Then I feel good. I wonder if people come to my house & wonder why I'm not "put-together" LOL I can't imagine putting on make-up for around the house & local errands. I'm clean & fresh & if I go out I have my sunglasses on anyway, nobody would know if i was wearing make-up or not. I'm more concerned about the state of my toenails than my make-up. LOL

OK, so what mascara do you all recommend? I've been using Maybelline Great Lash forever, but I'd like to try something new.

I love the Origins Underwear for Lashes and then their Lash Benefits on top of that. The UFL is a white cream that you put on like regular mascara and it lengthens your lashes like crazy, then you cover that with the LB for color...brown or black or whatever. I've used this origin stuff in high school...it was my friends though. hehe

So, I got myself feeling great this morning with all that stuff I got! what a difference for me....but then, I got in DH's face and asked him if he noticed anything and he didn't.... he couldn't tell that I had makeup on at all. So I guess that's a good thing right! men!

 men never notice anything.

I don't wear makeup very often. If I do than it is mascara, and tinted lipbalm. I did how ever get some mineral makeup that I am going to try for the next few days.

I don't think people should be able to tell you are wearing make up. I doubt people notice much of a difference when I wear it. It is subtle. The difference between putting on bracelet or not. It shouldn't make or break ya.

I too am a make-up wearer. I love Bobbi Brown and BE. I waiver between the BB foundation stick and the BE powder. I prefer the powder in the spring/summer because it absorbs into your skin.

I don't have time to read the whole thread but if you have a major make up counter at your mall (estee lauder, clinique, lancome, prescriptives etc etc) they will sit you down and teach you what colors you should wear. I work with all of those ladies at my job and they are wonderful. So to answer your question, yes I wear makeup everyday. Somedays I wear very natural makeup other days I put on bright blue eyeshadow and dark liner to really stand out. It's fun!

Some people never notice anything. I've lost 40 pounds in the last year (and 30 of that in the last 4 months, so not exactly gradual) and when I finally said something to DH about not noticing or commenting he said "well, maybe it'll be more noticeable when you go down a size." Excuse me! I'm actually down 2 sizes already, thank you very much.

He has never been the type to notice hair cuts, make up or not, new clothes, etc.

I know you're out of town, but I'm posting anyway! I can't believe he said this! You know, I was at the benches at the park yesterday, and looked up, and it really struck me, you HAVE lost weight, and it's totally noticable. I just hadn't really looked, 'cause we're usually talking & I'm usually watching B, kwim? Maybe he needs glasses... ;)

Now if I can just get back into my good jeans again...

I have blonde eyelashes which look better with mascara. They look like feathers floating in the air without it!
