When can I start Keihan on juice and when can I start baby cereal? I never really did either with Braden- so I am not sure on age for those.
Keihan is on Prevacid 1x a day and he needs to take the medicine mixed in fluid. All I have is a can of Lactose free formula (which I am thinking that he is allergic to) and whatever I can pump. It is becoming a pain to continually pump. So I was thinking that juice might be the answer. I dunno.
Also- what kind of juice do you use?

We didn't give our girls juice until they were at least two, and even then just in small doses. It can cause the runs if given too much. Maybe you could mix it in with a bit of soy or rice milk?

I'm not a fan of juice but if I were to give it, I'd have waited until well past the first year.
My personal opinion on solid readiness is, I would let him self feed when he is past 6mo, has his first tooth, can sit unassisted and is able to grasp food and put it in his mouth. I would never feed a baby, baby food~ with a spoon. If this method is necessary, then the baby is not ready, IMO.
I havn't done the juice thing yet, I suppose I will (watered down) when he can drink from a cup and cereal I tried twice and just seems dumb. I'd rather give DS foods that he can pick up himself.

I personally have never given any of my babies juice before they were 18 months or so. And then it was diluted like 10% juice 90% water. But that is just the way I like to do it, lol. Now for solids, well none of mine were ready before 6-8 months, Piper will be 10 months on Monday and still does not eat solids. She does have some finger type foods like cheerios, toast, and things like that. But she does not eat these daily, she is my little boob addict:heart:

yeah, I know I had ???s earlier so may not be the best person to give advice but...
no juice till at least 15 months or so***unless*** it is freshly pressed (in a juicer) then try more veggies like carrot, beet, ....
and that cereal, ummm, have you tasted it? YUCK! and it doesn't offer much in the way of nutritional value, IMO.

Kayla,
This may totally not work, but could you slip a tiny dropper into his mouth while he is nursing and slowly squeeze it in, so that it mixes with your milk as he drinks?

I would mix it with a smallest amount of purified water necessary and squirt it in his mouth with a good quality push dropper. Gently rub his cheek in a circular motion to get him to swallow. We had to use one 3X a day for Ava's antibiotic when she had a UTI at the ripe age of 3 weeks old and continue it for 10 days.

Does he have reflux? Eleanore had issues with formula being to thin and that made it harder for her to learn to suck swallow breathe, so we added just a bit of cereal to her formula. But with the cereal she got sort of constipated so we did give her a little bit of juice a day. Now she doesn't get either, she takes her bottles fine so we cut the cereal and with no she doesn't need the juice.
So my opinion is a little bit of juice probably wouldn't hurt, I wouldn't give more than 2 oz a day, just enough for his meds. Eleanore has to take phenobarbital and it is some nasty stuff so we give it to her thru her g button.
Hope you can find something that works for you guys.

Three of my kids were on acid meds that were just oral. They just recommended I breastfeed them either right before or right after administering the medication. You might look into something like that as an alternate. I just told them "they don't take a bottle" (they didn't) and it was a non-issue.

I would stay away from both. Juice intake decreases eating without increasing nutrients. It can cause diarrhea and tooth decay. It isn't a whole food. My boys are much older (5 and 7) and they still only have juice as an occasional treat, and it is fresh squeezed citrus. Apple, pear, and grape juices have no nutritional value (which is why they are fortified). They are basically sugar water.
The more research I do the more I believe that humans eat too many grains (and not enough beans, fruits, and vegetables). If I had it to do over I would have emphasized vegetables and fruits over cereal. I also agree with LAB - babies are ready for solids when they are eager and able to self-feed.
Of course, my answers don't solve your problem. I like the idea of mixing the med with water and squirting into the mouth.

i would 1st ask about a different form of meds.
how much liquid do you need to mix it with? can you just express a little breastmilk for it? does it need to be just a few drops or a whole feeding?
i didnt do cereal. i exclusively breastfeed until they are able to eat stuff off my plate that i can mash a little. i also dont do juice for babes. breastmilk only until they are learning to drink from a cup and then i put water in that.

The medicine comes from a gelcap and it is little balls- it doesn't dissolve. I asked the parmacy if I could just have him suck it off my finger & they said it was too strong. I have to mix it with 2oz of milk. He takes it once per day

I don't know why I couldn't express a tiny bit (1/2oz or so) mix the medicine- have him eat it- then nurse after. Why wouldn't that work?

You sure could - and I would also call the doc and find out about something else that he can take. There are LOTS of meds on the market and my last babe had severe GERD with ALTEs and they were able to prescribe compounded prescriptions that could be taken on a full tummy (of breastmilk).
I think pharmacists just assume  that most people still formula feed and it's just not the case.

Your baby is only a few months old and they expect you to mix his medicine? I'm really suprised by that. My 5 year old and my 5 month old both have reflux and liquid zantac is what is normally prescribed for an infant. Why the prevacid?
We have been through just about every GERD med known to exist. My 5 year old will be on meds lifelong. have you seen a gastro or is your ped. prescribing?
There is a type of prevacid that comes in a pouch that is specifically for mixing with water. I believe it is strawberry flavored. Maybe ask about that if you need to go the prevacid route.

He was taking zantac and he absolutely HATED taking it- that stuff tastes like CRAP. When we would give it to him- he would refuse to swallow it- to the point of refusing to breathe because if he breathed he would swallow- he would just hold it in his mouth- spittering & sputtering for about 40 seconds before he would gasp for air and choke it down. It was actually quite scary :(

Zantac is nasty stuff. If you have a compounding pharmacy they will flavour it for you. We pay $2 for them add grape flavouring and it has really helped.
I hope you find a solution. Maybe ask your doctor about the strawberry prevacid. Good luck mama:hug:

we go to a compounding pharmacy. Leila's prevacid is cherry flavored. :)
She's 6 months and we're not starting solids yet (which irritates her dr *sigh*)

just FYI - compounding meds is different from FlavoRx - that's just artificial colors and flavors and sometimes sugar. Compounding actually dissolves the medicine into a different base that makes it an oral medication when it is typically a pill form.
