After 3 years of growing my hair out during 2 pregnancies, I am getting ready to cut it and send it off to "Locks of Love". I was curious if anyone else had ever done this before? My DH is excited because he won't have to clean up my long locks out of the tub any more!

I did this a couple of years ago!!

My #1 & #3 did it first a few years ago, just before Christmas. Made the local paper even!! From there the local fair decided to pick it up as a yearly fund-raiser!!

I hadn't cut my hair since before the twins were born & did it as a fund-raiser at our local fair. We raised over $1,200.00 and DH raised some getting his head shaved & challenged others to do the same. We had just found out a dear friend's dd had cancer. DS told others, while on the stage why he decided to do it & he started to cry. We ended up making more money again from the people in the stands. I have such thick hair that it is equal to 2 donations!! DS (#4) got some friends to donate & had his head shaved too!

So...the next year a bunch of fellows had their heads shaved in front of the crowd at the fair & one fellow alone raised $1,300.00. Can't remember the total in the end, but I think it was clost to $3000.00. It was great. DD #2 & #3 (again) donated that year as well. Each time the local paper covered it.

So our family has donated over 50 inches in hair. We donate to a Canadian Organization.

I am growing my hair again & just trying to decide if I can let it get that long again. By the end I was getting headaches because my hair is so thick & heavy.

So glad you are doing this for someone who will benefit greatly!! It takes 10-12 donations to make one wig!!

That is such a great story. I decided to do it when I was pregnant for the first time, and haven't cut my hair in almost 3 years! I plan on growing it out again to do it a second time.... to me its just hair! Thanks for sharing the story!

We also donate our hair to Wigs 4 kids. It is done through an organization in Toronto. Locks of Love hair goes to the States. We just wanted our hair to stay in Canada & go to Canadian kids. The programs here aren't nearly as well known as those in the states. Unfortunately most in Canada who donate to Locks of Love have no idea their hair is going to the U.S.A.

I did Wigs for Kids too. It sounds like you were thinking of cutting your hair yourself and sending it in but there are a lot of salons that will cut your hair for free if you donate. I checked the website when I donated and went to a really posh salon that I would have never been able to afford.

I cut mine for Locks of Love a couple of months ago and it made me feel so good that I could do this as I can nolonger be an organ doner as I am a tx receiver. But my hair is still growing and in good shape so will be growing it out again. Go for it mama the feeling of helping is wonderful.

Dh did this. H had long, curly hair. The hair has to be pretty long, so I don't know if I've ever had enough. Nine inches or something? And there was a local children's hospital that took it, so we ended up not going through LoL.

dosent your hair have to be perm and dye free to donate?

The organization we gave to required the hair to NOT be permed OR colour treated or streaked & it needs to be generally healthy. The hair being cut must be clean & have NO hair products in it either (no hair spray or spray on conditioner or gel or mousse).
