Marlie's birthday is December 28th. So technically if I were going by the public school cut-off she'd have to be 5 by December 1st to go to Kindergarten, which means wating another year. Here, private school cut-offs are usually even earlier. She's definitely going to be ready for Kinder work in Sept, but I'd hate to "officially" call her Kinder because if she ever goes to school she would be much younger than everyone else (if they'd even let her in that grade). So I'm curious what others with a similar dilema have done...

Here the cutoff for K is September 1st and Zoey turned 5 on August 31st. She is the youngest kid in her class - and per her teacher, she's in the top 5 in the grade in terms of her work.

She was for sure ready. She was doing 'teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons and sailing thru' (she quit when she started 'real school') and we did alot of preK work at home but she was really wanting to start school so we enrolled her. No regrets at this point.

Lauren's birth date is 12/28/99. The cutoff date here is 7/31, so she had to wait until she was 5 yrs and 9 mos old to go to kindergarten. I don't think she was emotionally/socially ready to attend kindergarten last year, but she is B O R E D in kindergarten now--she just turned 6 this week. :(

We're in the same boat. Brianna turned 4 on December 11th. We are with Julian charter and my EF had told me that I could start her in K in August when the new year starts, BUT The problem is that it's more of a pre-k and she'd be listed as in K the next year as well. I haven't gotten anymore specifics, but don't know if I like the idea of her record showing an official K twice. She's really into writing her letters right now and I do believe she'll more more interested in school than Zachary was/is. I'm not sure what I'll do though. I don't want to do a full blown K program, but not necessarily interested in a preschool program either. I'm anxious to hear what others say:)

Our public school system cutoff date is Dec. 31! I have a December baby....so technically, he could enter Kindergarten the year he was 4 3/4yrs old. He didn't go to PS (never planned on it) but the school which he DID go to went by the PS cutoff....which meant he theoritically *could* enter before he was 5. The principal at the time said NO WAY NO HOW...I had to wait another year.

Honestly, socially he wasn't ready even though academically he was. *I* think it was a good move to wait the extra year.

Our cut off is sept 1 however our school distrcit will give children with in 2 weeks of that date a pretest for kinder. DD didn't take it because she is homeschooled but it's worth looking into to see if yours does something similar.

I know that for my DD she would NOT do well waiting. She's doing 1st grade work right now as it is. Plus when my DD gets bored she gets "nuts" and can be more of a problem than if she's having to work hard to keep up with the older kids.

Kelly, my dilemna too! Erik actually does qualify for K next year--but he in no way will be ready socially. Oh, and same here that most private schools have a sept or earlier cutoff, so he couldnt' go anyway (since we would do private if we weren't homeschooling). But he's doing mostly K-1st grade work now, and some 2nd grade work, so academically he's beyond ready.

aaanyway. We've taken the philosophy to work at the level Erik is read to work at. But I don't call him a Kinder because he's too young. I will probably keep calling him the age that he's at. So I'd say, do K work with Marlie next year, but don't call her a Kinder.

Thanks for the input. I think we will do what Heather suggested, call her the "age" that she is, and do whatever work suits her. So I guess she'll be pre-k next year

Kelly, Lauren is in the same boat.

She is already done with the preK Singapore Math - so she's going to be starting Singapore K math soon. And she's about ready to start working on letter sounds.

I plan on just going with what she is ready to do. If we ever come to a point where she needs to be in school, we will worry about grade placement then.

FWIW - Adam has already mastered everything that is required for K in OH. He is bored with K, and soem days he just doesn't want to even go. But, he also likes the crafts and music class and his teacher is great. Sooo... we are just moving ahead with him at home in math and reading. He's ready for it... I am NOT about to hold him back from wanting to learn.

Morgan's birthday is Dec. 11th and the cutoff here is Oct. 15th. Although she wouldn't be able to attend public school kindergarten next year we're going to do kindergarten at home. I think that cognitively she is ready. :)

I told D he could skip "2nd grade" if he could get his handwriting up to speed. He's doing 3rd grade Singapore, and his reading and studies are all at least at a 3rd grade level. If had to put him back in school, I think he'd be bored silly in 2nd grade, so we're calling it 3rd... He has a Nov birthday, so he was nearly 6 when he went to private school K. He was was ahead of the class on everything. Could do all his work in 15 minutes...

As for Patch, he'd have been in K by the birthday cutoff in Sept, but he'd have been such a young K, I would have waited a year. Luckily, we're here at home, and he just blew through 26 pages of K math today. He really needed a few more months to age. ;) He's also suddenly hit reading readiness and, more importantly, interest at 5 1/2.

I do think most girls can do K at 5 or even a smidgen less, but a lot of boys need to be 5 1/2 or more.
