Don't kill me!! I was laying in bed nursing Holden a few min ago, and started thinking about May Day for some reason. We always go to a Festival of the May, with a May Pole, mummers and everything ... and we always bring instruments to play together. Then I was thinking that I needed to get the kids new instruments because we accidentally left our box of instruments out in the rain and forgot about it a while back and most of them were ruined :( Then I thought of making instruments ... and now I am posting yet another swap :drop:

Here's what I am thinking ... We would keep this one small, capping it at 8 people, so we have to send 9 instruments each. You could make any kind of instrument, as long as it is playable. I am going to make rainsticks. Other ideas would be:
Paper mache maracas
Paper mache egg shakers
Wooden rhythm sticks
Wooden blocks with sandpaper
Wooden sticks with bells
Bell bracelets, bell ankle bracelets
Wooden tone blocks with sticks
Wooden xylophone (for anyone who is good at woodworking!)
etc.

Is anyone interested? This would need to close in April, so that I could get the instruments back to everyone by May Day, so I am thinking a mailing date of Monday, April 10th.

Swappers:
1 - Mom2kbeth - rain sticks
2 - PolkaDot - bell bracelets
3 - Copmom - small drums
4 - Huntersmama - rhythm sticks
5 - Mcmrymoon - mini glockenspiels
6 -

Who else is with me? :)

Selena can have my spot... we have a whole box just of musical instruments..

Grayson has some sensory issues with noise and avoids them.

If any spots open up, Lorelei is totally enamored with music of all kinds and I'd love to be involved.

Ok, I will switch out Zoe-Ann and Selena. Anyone mind if we add one more so that Hastings can have a spot?

I was doing paper mache eggs but are you talking felted ones like I have seen on Selena's site?

Hmmm, Maybe I should reconsider what I am doing unless shaky eggs are in vogue this year. then we can have all different types!! ;)

mom2kbeth
12-30-2005, 04:55 PM
My kids love the egg rattles. We have a couple of plastic ones and they are always in use when we take out the instruments. If you both want to do them, maybe one of you can do eggs and another can do another shape so they are a little different :)

PolkaDot
12-30-2005, 04:58 PM
Lorna loves them too! In fact all the kidlets seem to make music with them whenever they come to visit:)

ummmmmmmm - someone here keeps breaking the "no-more" swaps rule! i'll let it slide because you were milk drunk...or is that holden? ;)

luckily i probably wouldn't have joined this one - so i'm not too upset :LOL however - if someone has to drop i can fill their spot. i could probably make a mini glockenspiel

mom2kbeth

Umm, since the rules are already broken, can't we let Lorena in? Mini gloks!! How cool!! ;). Seriously though, I can do a different shape or try a maraca (paper mache). Maybe with a chicken wire base it would be quite strong and stand up to children shaking them.

tmrhopkins
12-30-2005, 09:52 PM
I would think that even if we have two maracas or rhythm sticks or something I it will be ok because don't most of us have more than one kid? Then there could be similar objects but not necessarily the same.

I'm fine with letting one more in.

And mini glockenspeils (sp?) would be awesome! Something totally different!

mcmrymoon
12-30-2005, 10:55 PM
i found a way to make them very easily out of 1/2" copper pipe. they will actually be in tune! when i say mini - i mean only cutting 3 pipes for each instead of the whole range...makes it lighter. kwim? not shrinking them. although - i could probably make them mini and then include the whole range. i'll have to finagle the math.

thanks for letting me in! i get to use a hacksaw for this swap!!!

scroll down to glockenspiels. seem easy enough! it looks like i can shrink them no problem...they'll just be high pitched...perfect for a fairy!!!!

Awesome! I cannot wait to see these instruments! I will hopefully get started on my rain sticks soon. Just need some cash for the supplies :)

That is cool!! I am partial the spike fiddle but won't be able to do it. All those are GREAT ideas. I also like the box drum. My oldest (Callum) got one for his 4th bday (I found it at a thrift store and loved it). He still has it but the littles keep breaking the mallets!!
I can't wait to get these instruments!!

yeah, I am talking the felted wool ones. Lorelei has several and likes to use one in each hand, but I don't want to step on toes and can certainly do something else. I was also considering gourd calabash rattles.

mom2kbeth
12-31-2005, 04:19 PM
Felt or gourd shakers/rattles - either would be great :)

Did Tawnya drop out? I think the nail rasp looks cool - all my drum ideas seem really lame after seeing what others are planning. I could try the nail rasp or the box drum from the link (if my dh will help me on the box drum.)

She did drop out; she was planning to have back surgery. It would be great if you wanted to try the nail rasps (or box drums), they looked really cool!
