We've had quite a long weekend here. I'll try to summarize:
Thurs, Jonathan develops a fever of 102. I call ped to see if he wants us to come in. I'm not huge on medicating fevers, but that's primarily because Lauren took them so well. Not Jonathan. He's miserable. They say treat with Tylenol.
Thurs eve, Jonathan's fever is 103 two hours AFTER tylenol and he's been shaking/shivering for an hour. Call after-hours advice nurse who tells me that he needs to be seen at Children's Urgent Care. There from 10-1 a.m. He barfs and his fever is 103.5 and he's listless. They give Tylenol and he's seen by the doc 2 hours later. Doc says probably virus, nothing can do but keep him comfy. Sent home and told to follow up with ped next morn.
Fri morn/day, J wakes up with high fever and barfs. We go to ped. Blood drawn, very high white blood cell count. Go to X-ray for chest. Doc thinks maybe early onset of pneumonia. Treated with shot of antibiotics and sent home with prescription. there 3 hours.
Fri eve, J's soft spot is bulging and pulsing and his fever climbs higher. Call advice nurse who calls ped (who is on-call that weekend). Ped calls back. Brief call. He calls Children's ER and tells me that they are expecting me. Get there and J's temp is 104, but that's two hours after tylenol so can't give him anything else. Again, I'm not super-pro medicating a fever but this kid was M.I.S.E.R.A.B.L.E. They do another blood draw, put in a hep lock as he might get admitted, catheter for urine, and spinal tap for CSF. Spinal fluid comes back clean (which is great), high white blood cell count in blood and urine. Sent for another chest x-ray. Negative for pneumonia. Thinking he has a UTI, but because of shot of antibiotics earlier, they likely won't be able to culture anything from his urine. Sent home after 5 hours (again, at 1 a.m.) and told to come back the next day if he has a fever. So, I tell them we'll see them in a few hours because he will have a fever.
Sat morn, J wakes with fever. Go to children's ER. He barf immediately as we walk in the door and he's fever is 104.4. Doc sees him, thinks it's either a really bad UTI or Roseola. Gives him another shot of antibiotics. Has us wait a couple hours to make sure J doesn't barf again (if he'd barfed again, they would have admitted him). He doesn't. We're sent home and told to come back if he barfs more than 4x/day or cannot keep his antibiotics down.
It's now Sun afternoon and I actually was able to put him down by himself. He's only wanted to be held by me (and generally standing up). I think he's turned the corner. We have to go back to his ped on Monday. I'm guessing that they will treat him as a UTI and he'll have to go for a kidney ultrasound. Poor baby (granted, the ultrasound will easily be the least painful thing he's experienced).
