For a while now Savannah has been taking 3 hours naps from about 12:30-3:30 or 1-4 ...something like that.

Yesterday I took her up for her nap like I usually do but she never fell asleep. Played for a good long while but then was ready to come back downstairs. Today she has been in her room for 35 minutes ...I thought she was asleep...and I just heard her moving around so I went to check on her and she was playing. She only has books and stuffed animals in her room and I'm fine if she wants to play a little before falling asleep.

But oh my...I am beginning to think she may be deciding to give up her nap. I'm not ready for this!!! :wah:

Although...if it meant she would sleep in later in the morning I might be ok with it! ;)

ack - im 30 and still take a nap - naps are tradition in the south and in my family. naps are never given up here :D

that said, sometimes the children arent sleepy so they are allowed to play quietly in their rooms for 2 - 3 hours (they usually fall asleep in the middle of a pile of books lol).

sounds just like my son...he is 21 mos. and the napless days are becoming more frequent...unfortunately, he is not a fan of playing by himself in his room.

What have I done wrong mamas?? My baby seems to want to be around his mama all the time, and its a rare occasion when he actually walks away from me to play alone.

What to do...

i have seen many kids like that....savannah likes to play alone..always has...i think it's somewhat a personality thing

i dont really have any advice - naps are mandatory, not optional in our house.
its just how things are here. i have had people come into my house and say that if they had my kids rooms they would want to take a nap too - our bedrooms are tailormade for sleeping, they are pretty much sensory deprivation chambers (room darkening shades, floor fans for noise) with some books.

yeeha!! theres still hope I guess...

Branwyn...how did you implement the mandatory napping?? I could leave Isaac in his room for hours and he probably wouldn't still not go to sleep some times

well like i said, they dont have to sleep but they have to rest :)
they just know that at 2pm everyone goes into their bedrooms and naps. they can sleep or sit in bed and quietly read/look at story books.

I am a big fan of quiet/nap time. I was raised in the south and everyone rests after lunch (at least in my family). After quiet time we could have a special snack. I can't sleep at night when I nap, but I need that down time in the afternoon to recharge before taking on the rest of the day. My oldest (almost 4 now) hasn't napped since he was 2. At first it was really difficult but then I really got to enjoying hime sleeping from 7pm every night until 7 or 8 the next morning. DH and I got to reclaim our nights ;)

well i hope i can do the same with my son if he stops taking naps

hopefully he will start becoming a bit more independent, i think part of the problem is we have been doing a lot of moving in the past year (3 times) this last move being the biggest, from Maine to Florida, and I think he is just feeling a little insecure right now

ok..since branwyn said she has 'nap time' at 2:00 every day..i decided to wait until 2 today for savannah's nap. i took her upstairs at 2:00..no real complaints and she was asleep very fast...i just woke her up at 6:00!!!!! i wanted to wake her up so she would actually go to bed tonight! woah!

21 months is a hard age to enforce rest time. For awhile, I had to rest with ERik. Now he knows the drill. (Anders sleeps still for 2-3 horus)
